My compliments on your review as well, Melee. Very nice job!
I did go see this movie back on the 24th of November (a Saturday). And I was pretty impressed with it. Darabont keeps his eye on the ball and doesn't (to his credit), stray from the overall story much. Both his direction and the films editing are solid and effective. It definitely ranks as one of the best film adaptations of Kings' work I've ever seen. Though like you Melee, I wish the movie had began just before the storm instead of after.
In terms of character portrayal, I felt the acting by all cast members was very decent, if not exceptional at times. Toby Jones is indeed a scene stealer and hands in an superb performance as Ollie. I also enjoyed the "biker guy" played by actor Brian Libby. Apparently he's been in all of Darabont's movies and is considered by Darabont to be a good luck charm!
Given it's modest (from what I've read) budget, I thought the SFX were quite impressive. A second or two where a couple of bits came off just a wee bit cheesy, but otherwise top notch. If you like your special FX slam-bang, you won't be disappointed by the efforts of KNB on this one. Additionally, if you don't like movies with a lot of blood, you might wanna just stick with the novel on this one.
As for the ending? I don't think anyone in the theater, including myself was expecting the gut-punch it delivers. Just. Freakin'. Whoa. I expected Darabont to deliver, and he most certainly does. An excellent horror movie on many levels. And a welcome addition to my DVD collection when it's released!

Thanks for the excellent review, Meleestormbringer, that's seriously one of the better reviews I've read on the net in a while. I'm looking forward to this, but am nervy about it because I never handle *shock jump* moments well. Does it have many of those? Happily if I like I can see it again and again, as I have a cinema card allowing me unlimited viewings of films for £11 a month. Yay!

yea, there are quite a few jump scares. They pretty much telegraph them. You know they're coming, you just don't know what exactly is gonna jump out.

Just seen it and I have to say it's a fantastic adaption of an SK work. Frank Darabont strikes again! The film, throughout, has that Stephen King ensemble 'feel' that regular readers of his will understand (and it seems Darabont gets it, that's pretty obvious by now). Then the end scene comes up and really gives you a kick in the balls! Excellent flick! Btw, loved seeing the various genre artwork in Thomas Janes house... including one of the pieces of cover art (DVD, etc) from John Carpenter's 'The Thing'!

Finally got to see this. I have loved the original novella since first reading it as a kid. It was a huge early inspiration for me. This film adaption delivered on EVERY level. Darabont stuck to the story in all the right places and delivered a brilliantly shocking ending that was at once completely different from the original story, but at the same time cleverly in keeping with it. Acting from EVERYONE was absolutely first class. In fact the only aspect that wasn't 100% perfect was the special effects, but they were still more than adequate.
Loved those posters at the beginning, Nerf. The one he was working on that got trashed in the storm was for The Dark Tower - a picture of the gunslinger and the rose. Brilliant!

That is good to know that it seems to be a good movie, most of the movie i saw about Stephen King were really delivering the story i have read in the book or at the least a big part of it vividly, like the Mongeliors for exemple and the second movie shining.

Ive got the DVD. Ive not seen the film at the cinemas nor red the book but i loved this film. Shocking, gory and and typical of King as much about the frailties of human nature, (panic, stupidity and irrationality in this films case.) Its a brilliant film.
The special edition of the DVD has on the bonus disk a remasterd Black and white version that makes the film look like an old B-movie and its brilliant. (This extra is not avvalible in the USA!)
Full of making of extras and a interview with the great author himself.
Well worth the 15 quid i paid.

Thanks so much for that review, i saw the mist i have read the story in The skeleton Crew,
and love both, the ending in the movie is very dramatic, unbelievable unbearable, in the book there is a bit of hope.
i liked that movie very much i watched it at least 4 or 5 times.
Chantale. The Idea about a door opened on another world is very exiting.
