(Cheers Lensman, I shall just copy and paste your wise disclaimer)

And we're not making excuses for it Flibble, we genuinely like it and think its good. Not great, (though it has moments of greatness), but good. I wish you'd stop attacking it repeatedly, because I like talking about the film and I can't be bothered to go through the arguements all over again everytime we try to discuss it. People I respect like the film. My dad who's a fan of the book likes the film. Hell, I even like Cruise in it, however so much he may be an earnest fool outside of acting.
Besides, Spielberg never set out his tent as making a faithful adaptation - he just wanted to capture the terror, the awe and the some of the themes of the novel. I think he succeeded. If you don't think he did then fair enough, but please stop trying to force your view in these threads. Cheers.
Almichev - kinda phallic concept art, I'm sure Freud would be gouging his eyes out.

Re: Appropriateness of posting... and my position on it. Just so we're all clear on it. You may have noticed that I have been pretty much letting you lot get on with it until now. We all know each other well enough to be able to get along fairly civily.. even if member's views on some things are so different. I thought that people would appreciate the freedom to speak how they wish (within reason). BUT.... This kind of thing isn't something I haven't seen a thousand times before. By the same token, I think the board would be fairly dull if everyone did agree all the time: 'See that Spielhines epic' 'Yeah good wasn't it.' 'Yes, I liked it.' 'Do did I!' 'Yes' 'Ermm' As far as I am concerned, I will only get involved if personal attacks are made anywhere on the board or if I feel I really need to.. i.e. if my board is threatened by rampaging pro/anti Spielhines spouting loons. Also, if I get any complaints I will be talking to the people who have made such attacks and, if need be, instigating the three strikes rule. Yes, things can get heated, but a line has to be drawn and there are those who come close, on occasion, to stepping over it. I know some people find it hard to be reasonable about some things but that really isn't my problem. I'm not running care in the community here... this is a forum for fans of various subjects and coming here is meant to be an enjoyable experience for everybody. It boils down to this, if you can't be reasonable about a subject, at least to the other members of the boards, stay away from it. If you want to be a pillock and slate other people for the hell of it, go to the IMDB forums. They love that shit there. By all means debate, get a little hot under the collar if you really must, but respect other people's opinions... even if you don't understand or agree with them. You all know the drill. Don't make me work... I hate that. Nuff said.

I,ll third that! i dare i say...Love the movie, and while respect other's views and feeling towards the film it would be nice if they sometimes showed the same respect to those who do like the film.
Just my opinion.

Erm, you say you are glad there is at least one who shares your opinion, Lensman. Have you read my posts? Aren't I kinda making the same comment that it is a good film, but not perfect? Do I ever get any thanks? Nope. I'm all jealous and upset now

For my part, I thought it had good points... and bad. Like a lot of movies. I've seen it a few times now and enjoyed it. I don't think it's a bad movie, on the whole.. but it was obviously rushed and that's one of the things that does irk me a bit. These marvellous concept art images and deleted scene photos that people have posted show how much better it could have been. I can also see why people who wanted a good solid TWoTW adaption were disappointed. Looking at it that way, so am I. But, with the fantastic tripods and some really striking scenes (i.e. the tripods pursuing crowds in the distance), as a Sci-Fi blockbuster, it does what it says on the tin.

Aaahhh! Who let that Romulan in here?
I love the novel, I love the original film, I even like the Pendragon version, but that doesn’t stop me from absolutely living the Spielberg version. I have to admit, the Spielberg version is on my top five favorite movies list, along with the first three “Alien” films and the 1960 version of “The Time Machine”.
There’s no shame in loving a good movie. Every movie should be judged by its own merits. If you had never read or seen any other version of “War of The Worlds” what would you think of this version? It’s the only way I got past the blatant disregard for “Alien” and “Predator” canon “Alien vs. Predator” (hopefully the new AvP film is better than the first).

You're right Methos - no shame in loving a good movie but how anyone can love or "live" this film I don't know. The only person living this film is Tom Cruise as he has to take over the story so the film's mainly about him. How any fan of Wells book can like this film or indeed some of the other travesties knocking about I also don't know. Wells masterpiece has consistently been diluted, bastardized and just generally treated like crap over the years by these film making chumps. And I'm fairly sure I still wouldn't be impressed by this flick if I hadn't read Wells book either.

Wow, I thought that Dakota Fanning was the main star... I wouldn’t like it nearly as much if I thought that it was all about Tom Cruise, I can see your point. I’m a Dakota fan; I’ve enjoyed watching her grow up so far.

To Lensman- "I'm preparing myself to forgive you" (Monty, Withnail and I, 1987)
"The only person living this film is Tom Cruise as he has to take over the story so the film's mainly about him"
Erm, isn't that the point? To follow an every-man on his journey of protecting his family through an alien invasion.
