I returned to the film... With no small amount of trepidation...
My intention was not to start this segment off with a negative but the main thing that really detracts from what enjoyment I can get is the sloppy cutting of scenes.
I guess dedicated Timbo fans (well, employees of Pendragon) who raise their eyes to the sky and say, "Well you wanted a shorter film!!"... It's not so much that we wanted the film shorter, what we wanted was the film to flow with the story, whether it was 15minutes or 4 hours long.
It appears (to me) that the cuts that have been made have been made by someone who just wanted to trim time off, scenes just have bits cut off the end.
For example, in one scene the artillery man is is London(?) when the martians appear and some poor soul gets stamped on by asausage waving machine tripod. He starts to run and thanks to the 'wonderful' cutting he is suddenly in the countryside - there's no continuity and flow. Unfortunately this is typical of the cuts made in the film.
Positive comment alert!
I need to compare this to the original but I *do* like the long shots of towns/cities that have been walloped. They look okay and the music fits well there.
Also, apart from the sound of the tripods footsteps (did they sample the uncorking of a wine bottle) I like the audio to the film - yes - even the slightly horsey sounding tripod calls. Good stereo imaging was used.
I think that (suspect accent changing aside) the actor playing the artilleryman is ok as well.
The explosions appear to have been worked on as well. Sometimes they work well (buildings etc) but when the same sort of explosive effect is transposed over a person it doesn't really work as well.
next: the buried house and the Thunderchild scene...
