See, you are too quick to blame Apple. iTunes has in fact lots of FREE available apps in it's new app store. It is down to the supplier if they want to charge, and I certainly don't mind paying 59p (the price of a bottle of pop) for the convenience of having it made into a proper ebook, with pages and chapters, a word search, and the ability to remember where you left off. Plus, this is from their site-
"20% of the proceeds from the sale of these books is donated to Project Gutenberg, which provided the original book content."
And let's face it, if you saw one of these books in Tescos, they aren't going to give it away for free are they? The story might be public domain, but someone needs to pay for the material it's on, or in this case the app being programmed.

Well it's fine if you are happy to add a few quid to a pot that will benefit the greater good, I suppose, like PG. No one who loves books can deny that they do good work. They surely do. But let's not argue about it. We all know the book in question is worth a few quid of anyone's money, ultimately. If I had an iphone (unlikely though it is) I'd stump up the pennies just to keep the dream alive. But, at the end of the day, I've always been a paper fan. Love having them books in my hand. Guess that makes me old school. Tactile, that's me. Never really got e-books... and I suspect I'm not alone with that. That's probably why places like Borders and such are still very much in business. That's a very good thing, I think. E-books are cheaper, generally... but they really can't compare to the lovely papery real thing, imo.

The good thing about ebooks is that you can have loads of books instead of one on one little device. At the moment I have twelve ebooks on my iPod Touch, WotW being one. As for paper books, I know what you mean Nerfy, but I like my books in pristine condition, and they never stay that way. At least in a digital form you don't have to worry about that. Besides, the argument about the ebooks costing money is now defunct. There is a new app called 'Stanza', which is a completely FREE app in iTunes, and it is really great. Using the app itself on your iPhone/Touch, you can browse from what seems like hundreds of completely FREE ebooks and download the ones you want to your device directly. They all stay within the app, so you load the app and select a book from your collection to read. WotW is one of the many I have, and this one hasn't cost me anything. To be honest, I really didn't mind paying for the other ebooks I already have (only had a few anyway), but I suppose it is a bit of a waste now I can have the same book, using this new app, for free. Hey ho. I have now updated the post my op above links to, with a piccy of the app in iTunes.
