Hi there everybody. I'm back from my break, but missed this place too much to be away for long.
Anyway, this question is primarily aimed at Bittersound, who I know has a copy of the new release. But anyone else who has it might be able to answer the question- is it definately a new version? ie. Is it different from the original Director's Cut (the second release), or is it just a re-release of the same version?
If it is different, I know certain comments have been made on the new version already, but it would help me if someone could go into a little more detail on the differences between this and the first DC. Thanks.

the only differences that i have noticed are the (seemingly) random scene cuts, less walking and some extra fx.

So this new version has even more random editing than the first DC? Blimey! I know you mentioned about the cuts and less walking etc before on another post Bittersound, but it wasn't made clear what you were comparing to- the original 3 hour version, or the original DC.

Hey there Nerfy. It's good to be back. To do a full comparison, shouldn't you watch the original 3 hour version, then the first DC right before watching this new release?

And that is quite a task! I don't have the DC and I will have to see if I can do the original and this new one in one sitting without the, already ragged, threads of my mind unravelling. Nice to see you back, btw.

To be honest, I couldn't see how Hines could have made a worse cut than the original Director's Cut. Instead of chopping whole scenes that weren't needed, he decided to keep every single one of them, but chop off the begining and end of each one, which made some scenes feel far too rushed. I never finished my own edit of the film that I started a while ago, but I am certain that it would have been far better than the original 3 hour version and the original DC effort. This is why I haven't even considered buying this new release- for one thing I wasn't sure if it was the same DC re-released rather than a new one, and for another reason, I have no confidence in Hines' ability to edit.

Ahhh! Now we're getting to the nitty gritty. So you haven't seen the original DC then. By the sounds of it, the version you have seems like it could be exactly the same cut as the original DC (the second release, after the original 3 hour version) just re-released. Hmmm.

I have the "Classic" in my hands as we speak. I bought the original 3 hour version, but I didn't bother with the "Director's Cut" because after hearing that it had nothing new and no re-done effects, I decided that Hines had enough of my money. This "Classic" has some reworking of some of the effects though. I haven't watched it past the Heat Ray, yet so I don't know about the rest of the movie. I can say this - The editing of what I have seen so far is just not very good.
I will leave it at that until I have seen the whole thing.

The small amount of re-working of effects you see in your version is probably the same is in the original DC that I have. Who ever said there wasn't any effects altered in the DC was lying. The re-worked effects though aren't much of an improvement at all. Until we can get it confirmed otherwise, I am confident the new 'classic' version is exactly the same as the DC, re-released.
