There is two questions about things I am wondering:
1. After the Martian falls off the cylinder, some device is seen from the pit. I do not think it was ever explained what it was. I would think it was the Handling Machine.
2. Some sort of weapon striked the Westminister Clock Tower that looks similar to a green lightning bolt. I have wondered what it was since it certianly did not look like the heat-ray.
What are your thoughts?

question #1 - that device in the pit is Anthony Pianas mustache. it was notorious for falling off at innoportune moments. most of these 'mustache failures' were edited out of the final version. this one was obiously missed.
question #2 - no, it certainly didn't look like the heat ray. many have pondered the mystery of the 'green lightening bolt'. popular consensus says that it was merely the catalyst which sent the clock tower on its magical mystery tour over the Thames - origin unknown. of course, this was intentional as Hines felt that it would be much more effective if various elements were left to the imagination of the viewer... such as special effects, quality acting, coherent editing, and overall enjoyment of the movie.

2. Some sort of weapon striked the Westminister Clock Tower that looks similar to a green lightning bolt. I have wondered what it was since it certianly did not look like the heat-ray. I think that was a deliberate attempt for us to 'see it' per say. The heat ray is suppose to be an invisble beam (As shown by them) so having the clock tower just explode for no apparent reason may not have seemed 'right' to them - so they tried to correct that with the greenish lighting. My guess anyway.
