Patrick's work as No.6 is, of course, legend (I've made the pilgrimage to Portmeirion twice!) .
But he was also a gifted director. Especially in the TV field.
The later episodes of 'Columbo', for example, he directed showed a little of that surrealism and imagination he was famous for (check out the one where Billy Connolly... as a conductor... is the murderer). And they were MUCH the better for it.
It's a sad day indeed.
