Aluminium vs. Aluminum

In my Tor Books edition of WOTW the name of the metal is spelled "aluminum" in chapter II-3. Yet I understand the correct British spelling (and pronunciation) is "aluminium". Can anyone speak to why my American edition has the American spelling? (Well that does sound rather a silly question put like that, but I haven't noticed other books having Americanized spellings just 'cuz they're published here.) Does anyone have a first edition (or facsimile) who can check on the spelling in the first book edition of the novel?
