I really like the JW tripod designs. The reason? Well, truthfully... I have to admit that, since I was a kid, I've never found the design scary... but have instead always thought they were rather cute. I think I'll always like them for that reason. ;D Other reasons... well, they were also the first tripod design I ever encountered, and it was the JW music that got me interested in WotW in the first place... so I think that they will always be among my favorite designs because of this as well.

Hello everyone! Been inexplicably away for a few weeks I'm with Stewy on this one. If anything, to me the 'green a*se' eyes are one of the most scary looking parts. I used to be terrified as a child trapped in my bedroom when my dad used to play the album too loud whilst I was trying to sleep, believing that I'd open the curtains to find this evil green metallic face peering in! Ugh! The way the machines were portrayed in the artwork also helped I think. The album cover is of course a classic, but the other pictures add to the effect - the attack in London emphasises the scale and height of the machines, the metaphorical confrontation of the Parson with a troop of martians is a dark soft focus nightmare, whilst the stark washed-out Dead London scene shows how bizarre the city landscape looks dotted by these unearthly machines. KR

KR That's the thing though! The eyes are scary if you're young but I just don't think they cut it anymore [ and don't forget there's also a difference between the album eyes and E.Eyes recent redesign ]. If I was to redesign the Trim tripods I'd either give them the one green eye or have 2 green spotlights or headlight type eyes. Perfectly round, non bug eye looking and not squashed together like some Hulks ar*e!

Headlight type eyes done wrong will just look like...well...headlights! ;D TBH the only headlights I find remotely unnerving are those on BMW 7 series! KR

KR Ahh, but I'm not saying they should look like car headlights [ complete with Lucas symbol ] but more like on the Spielberg tripods - but without the beam or if you look at Trocs tripods you'll see they have round headlight sort of eyes but they don't look like a Hulks ar*e or a cartoon bug eyed monster. 2 perfectly round green glowing eyes that have an organic texture set in to the ovalish surround but smaller and more menacing looking. They'd look similar to the album tripods but I think much neater and not weak design wise - and they wouldn't look like the Hulks.....................you get the picture! I just think that a lot of fans of the album are slightly blinkered because of their fond memories and can't see that the tripods need to look less cartoonish and more menacing. And as I've often said - I also think there's room for variations of tripod in Jeff Waynes film that are even closer to the book. I think it's ridiculous that a film that's sod all like the book [ Spielbergs of course ] has the most faithful tripods.

i absolutely loved the wayne tripods as a kid. as i grew older i began to have qualms with them, which have probably been mentioned here already:
1. the heat ray was not a gun that stuck out of the main body. 2. there are no tentacles on the JW martian, except for that one... i think, and its more like a thin short whip. 3. the legs are just too damn tall. it would be really hard to walk that thing around with such tall 'shins' and such short 'thighs', if you get my meaning. very ungainly. 4. there are obviously 'wheeled' parts, and the book describes 'intricate sliding parts' and 'artificial muscle sheaths'.
what i did like was how the handling machines actually have 5 legs. i HATE the way they put 6 of em on the JW CG version. HATE HATE HATE IT!
on the old boards, somebody made a really cool scratchbuilt JW handling machine... and put 6 legs on it. completely ruined it IMO.
another guy scratchbuilt an original one that looked very industrial and victorian-ish. 5 legs. awesome.
the spielberg tripods IMO were the LEAST like the book of any yet created. why? those bendy legs. in the book, Wells definitely describes them as having jointed legs with 'knees', not wobbly slinky legs. shields? come on. no black smoke cannisters... the only thing remotely accurate about them was they actually kind of 'held' the... umm... heat rays? the flesh disintegrators with arm-like appendages, and they carried 'cages'... sort of like baskets, i guess.
they were definitely cool, but NOT accurate IMO.
the Pendragon tripods, as horribly animated as they were, were the most faithful adaptations to the book i think. the only thing really wrong were those chain link tentacles. even the heat ray was attached to an appendage. the only thing really missing was the basket. and believe it or not, i actually liked the pendragon tripods. i just wish they would have been animated decently.

Like a lot of people on here, Jeff's version was the first I heard of the story, so those Tripods stick in my mind as the best 'shit-yer-pants' version. The 'Panic in the streets' piccy has the most impact IMO

I don't know if I'd say Spielbergs tripods were the least like the book out of all the various tripod incarnations but you're right they certainly weren't totally authentic to the book. And the lack of green smoke coming from the joints ain't too clever either. And the lack of the black smoke! Aint't it annoying the way film makers etc have to change things for the sake of it! Also agreed about the Wayne/Trim tripods. I like them to a certain extent but the green smoke coming from the joints adds to the eerieness in Wells description and for some strange reason that's missing on them too.
