Just come back from seeing an early viewing of Avatar in 3D, part of an early Birthday present.
All I can say is, it's FANTASTIC!! AMAZING!! BRILLIANT!! The story is very simple but that by no means detracts from the film.
SPOILER:
The story if you are not aware is basically the story of pocahontas.
END OF SPOILER:
The 3D effects were amazing, forget about someone thrusting a spear at you. some of the best effects were very simple things like dust motes flouting in the air and holes in a perspex screen which you felt as though you could put your finger through.
Almost the whole film is CGI or has CGI elements in it. I know a lot of people criticize the film industry for using CGI too much but if this is the future of the Sci/Fi or Fantasy movie I say bring it on.
In short, one of the best films I have ever seen. But you will have to go to the cinema to get the best results it will be lost on a TV screen.

Wasnt at all interested at seeing this film after seeing the 'im-not-going-to-tell-you-anything-about-the-film' trailer, but after seeing this and a couple of other reviews I have been persuaded to go see it probably tuesday/wednesday nexty week.

Utterly awesome movie, i was completely drawn in.
The story was a little twee and the ending i saw a million miles away nevertheless was told brilliantly. Its basically The Last Samurai. soldier hired to fight the Samurai falls in love with their ways and enfds up fighting with the so called 'savages' hes sent to work against.
The CG was awesome but not in a gimmiky kind of way. The Jar Jar Binks meets the Smurfs is very unfair joke and the trailers in this case arnt the best bits of the movie. Forget the trailers, They mean poo, you need to see this for yourselfs. The range of emotion in the Cg characters is incredible! The ecosystem of pandora is amazing from the creatures to the bioluminous plantlife.
The acting was top notch, Sigourney and Steven Lang totally commanded the acting between them, the tough savvy scientist and the tough Savvy Soldier. Opposite sides of the same coin. Sam Worthington is a really cool actor and i forsee great things for the guy.
9/10 This films blows away the opposition. Forget the standard fair of T4 or rhe frankly utterly appaling Transformers 2, Avatar shows both films just how down the scale they are.
Cameron is back. Hooah!
PS: 3D or not? Well i saw it in Standard bogovision and the thing is its still head and shoulders above the opposition this year. Infer from that what you will.

Dicky B and I popped along to see this in 3D today and, although I wasn't sure about it before, I admit I really liked it alot. The FX were mind-blowing, of course, but also the story was much less 'smushy' than I expected and the performances very good. The battle sequences were astounding. That, I think, is where the 3D really shone. On a side note I must say, I think I hang around the internets too long. Mainly 'cos I found the Blue-Cat-type-lady version of Sigourney Weaver more than a little hawt.

I, my wife and daughter went to see this yesterday.
A stunning sci-fi in virtually every regard. The FX in this movie just keep coming and are indeed as breathtaking as you'd hope they would be. The emotions the CG characters (Na’vi) in this movie convincingly display, from utter anguish to true compassion is just astounding. And in terms of telling the story it makes all the difference.
The story is akin to Dances With Wolves, but with immensely more latitude. And Cameron keeps it tight. A complete story in and of itself. Much like Aliens, Terminator, True Lies, the Abyss and Titanic, this movie requires no sequel to sell itself.
Fine performances as well. Especially from Saldana who CGs Neytiri.
The 3D element at times added some very cool tricks of the eye to otherwise mundane objects. Floaty bits and particles look especially intense. Plant fauna as well. But it's carefully balanced and never overplayed. I'd agree to again go see this movie in 2D in a heartbeat though. Yes, it's that good.
