Running Jeff Wayne's War of The Worlds PC on XP

Got hold of a copy of the classic PC game from 1998 but having trouble running it on XP?

Help is at hand!

Here are instructions on how to make the game work on Windows XP...

Right click and 'save target as' on this link...

When the download is complete, unzip the file with Winzip and cut the 'WoWexe' that is in the file and paste it in the game folder when you have installed it. It will ask if you want to replace the old file.. answer 'yes'.

Go into the JWWOTW folder in 'Program files' and right click on both the WOW and WOW.exe icons, select the 'compatibility' tabs, check the 'run with' boxes and select 'Windows 98' on the drop down tabs. Click 'Apply' and 'ok'.

You should now be set.
You *may* find that some of the music won't work and the cut scenes may be distorted but at least the game itself should now run. You may need to go into the JWWOTW folder and click on the WOW.exe to run the game first time. In my case, once I'd done this, in subsequent sessions the game loaded fine from the normal game menu
Also this game, being old and not configured for XP, may try to convince your PC it doesn't have memory to run it.
Best way to combat this is to..
1) Always run the game from a new boot.
2) Make sure all your caches are clear.
3) Make sure there are NO other programs running before playing.
It should work ok if you follow the above steps.

Hm, interesting, i'd like to play the game again (my system runs XP), but i need to buy the game again (amazon are selling it apparently), the human disk of the one i already got has a hiddious 1 inch crack leading out from the center of the disc.....so i need to get the game again, i'll see if i can play it without the patch first...if not i'll give the patch a try.

Found this game today in the local charity shop for £2 complete with box

Thanks to Nerfus's link got it running on my crummy 1k Laptop compuker, now to figure out how the hell to play it!

IT'S CURRUPTED!

The downloaded patch won't even let me extract the zip, says "No files to extract" and when i try to open the zip by double clicking, i get "File is currupt", you need to fix the link.

I just got the game today, after ordering it off amazon 4 days ago, it installed, but won't run.

Compatibility mode doesn't work (now isn't THAT a surprize.....)

OK, after some searching, i downloaded the patch from another site, and it works just fine. current playing the martian campaign, i'm down to Liverpool, the Penines and Hull. 3rd Gen FMs, Scouts, BMs, 2nd Gen Tempests and 1st Gen Flyers (not built any yet)
