Yeah... on the one hand it could be another Battlestar Galactica or Dr Who - reimagined, vital, and wowing new generations all over again. Or it could be another Star Wars prequels - anodine, sterile, and adding nothing to the mythos. just... ok.

Well, I for one, would love to see someone try a remake of it. If it turns out bad fine, but someone should certainly try. Especially after the success of BSG. They've done an awesome job with that.

Well Space 1999 was originaly to be the follow up to U.F.O. with Moonbase Alpha and the Eagles taking the fight to the Alien's homeworld. This is a myth which has grown in the fan press. The only particle of truth behind this myth is this: There was a proposed design for an expanded Moonbase for season two of UFO. But of course UFO was canceled with no season two ever being produced. So was the design was instead used for Moonbase Alpha. Gerry Anderson never meant for the two series to be connected. In fact, IIRC he refers to this on the DVD commentary track for the UFO series.

Captain Scarlet was remade in CGI. And there was a "remake" of Thunderbirds as anime-- "Thunderbirds 2086".

i dunno, the beeb redid a quatermass not so long back, and i wasn't mad keen. Mind you, throw enough money at it (a la Dr Who), and you never know. Yeah, they did the first one. It was live though - and therefore limited in the effects that they could put into it KR

Would be interesting watching the try to get home finding out thereis no more home to get too as the moon was thrown ouit of orbit and we all know what that means for us.
But really Space 1999 was for me anyway one of the more forgettable series of old.

I think it's one of those "You have to be the right age" things. I never cared for the old "Battlestar Galactica" nor "Space: 1999", probably because I was too old for them. Many younger viewers liked these shows. But I just *loved* the older Gerry Anderson series, when I was younger, all the way from "Fireball XL-5" to "UFO". "Thunderbirds" and "UFO" were my favorites. But I find now I can't watch "Thunderbirds"-- too silly and slow-moving. I do still enjoy "UFO" tho, have the entire series on DVD.

I enjoyed the original BSG when I was six, but didn't really like it upon rewatching it. Love the remake though. Space 1999 I never really saw much of, and though I admired elements of Blakes 7 (the plot, the script) I thought it just a little too campy, hammy and cheap.
Personally I'd prefer new shows with entirely new concepts. I've got a few (hopefully) great stories in my mind (turning one of them into a novel right now) and I'm sure there's thousands out there with fantastic new ideas too.
I've never liked the idea of 'franchises', I reckon once you've told a story you should move on. I loved Babylon 5, but after 'The Beginning' TV movie I was really annoyed with JMS for trying to drag his creation out further - now with even more proposed spin-off movies. Agh. It was a top story JMS, now give someone else a chance!
Same with Star Trek, the well is dry. I can't understand the sci-fi addiction for keeping things in the same universe.
(Hypocrites corner time: Though I'll be very happy if Susanna Clarke chooses to continue writing in her Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell world, as it's one of the bestest things ever.)
