LOL! Well I hadn't thought to compare the two, but indeed they both are the absolute nadir; bottom-of-the-barrel drek. And I have both on DVD!

Interesting comparison! I for one love Star Wars to death but the holiday spacial is definately in a class of it's own... (well, it might have Timbos WOTW sitting next to it...)
Apart from the Star Wars: Holiday Special being painfully long, it has some quite bizzare elements that make it worthwhile: Wookie porn anyone? Wookie language for the first 20 mins or so without any translation!!! Chewie's kid having to take out the garbage!!! (priceless!!!). Luke Skywalker with loads of makeup. Carrie Fisher's finale song... I could go on and on...
For the comedy aspect, it does beat WOTW but at the same time both shows are painfully tedious in the long run.

Let's see... one has Bea Arthur singing... the other has the painfully awful Thunder Child scene.
Hard to say which is worse...

My God. So... it actually exists? I always thought it was a joke fans had made up, or something. Jebus.

Not a myth at all. Just Google on <"star wars holiday special" price> and you'll get plenty of "hits".
It is truly legendary in its awfulness. George Lucas not only disowned it, he was quoted as saying if he had the time he'd track down and destroy every single bootleg copy. This was a TV variety show, I'm not sure how much (or how little) input Lucas himself had in its production.

Thanks muchly DF! Yes indeed, this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=asnVcbWQ2cg...is a well-edited five minute version of the two hour special. And remember: This is the *good* parts version! However it's missing the cartoon which introduced Boba Fett. Altho the animation on that was pretty bad, it makes the rest of the special look good! You can see a not-so-great copy of that here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rtPmPDrWjY
