I was hoping they would stay closer to Matheson and keep the horror in the suburbs where it was intended, but this looks much less disagreeable than it did when Will Smith was first announced as the lead. Ever read "I Am Legend"? A respectable allegory for the eventual loss of control of the White Anglo majority over the American cultural landscape. Originally it was African-Americans' growing influence that was scaring Whitey and driving him to his safe, suburban enclave, while today I'd imagine it would apply to Spanish-speaking immigrants.

I would probably have put this in the Horror section.
I own the book. I love the book. It is such a simple story about the last human on Earth dealing with his loneliness, his health and the horde of blood thirsty dead that gather around his house every single night. Fantastic. I am not looking forward to the film because like 99% of every adaptation that Hollywood does it is nothing like the book and is normally crap!!
I did like the film 'The Last Man on Earth' starring Vincent Price which was an adaptation of this Novel. Kept it quite close to the book. Worth a view.
Oh, and this novel inspired Romero to create ‘The Night of the Living Dead.’

It's one of those films/books that is built on a sci-fi premise, but has horror content, so it could go in either section really (same as films like Alien etc).
I will have to have a look at the Vincent Price offering - I love his films anyway (House on Haunted Hill etc). Didn't know it was an inspiration for Night of the Living Dead either - thanks for the info.

nope..no...sorry...not gonna do it...
I was prepared to give it a chance, although i am very attached to the original film version and love the book. Now that i've seen the trailer, not gonna bother. I might check it out on dvd, but I'm less interested in it now than I was before.

well, to each their own. My partner saw the trailer and wants to see it the theater more than ever. So most likely I'll see it the theater too, but I still stand my ground that it can't be anywhere near as cool as the original.

i saw the trailer when i went to see transformers, and it didn't resemble what i remember from the book at all... except the theme is post apocalypse of some kind. they didn't show any vampires at all.
i haven't read the book in years... like, a decade and a half maybe, but wasn't Ruth black in the book? do i remember that correctly? interesting that they cast a black man instead

Plot Outline: Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time. www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/ This film is based on the superb book of the same name, written by Richard Matheson: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_legend I watched this film last night, and really enjoyed it. Already, it is split with opinion, people either loving it or hating it. The main reason is, this is not your typical Hollywood Blockbuster. And nor should it be. The story is about the last human on Earth, surviving with out human interaction, and being hunted at night by beings that crave his blood. Will Smith is excellent. He really gets across Robert Neville's struggles, not just with survival, but also with his own loneliness. It is also very sad in places. Even though this is not totally faithful with the book, it keeps enough of it to give respect, but also creates some new and interesting questions. This film will leave you to ponder. The ending is, in my opinion, not as good as the book, but is still explosive. The only negative I have, which has been stated in other reviews of this film, is the CGI monsters/zombies. I think with the money they had at their disposal, make-up and robotics would have made for more convincing monsters/zombies. They just weren't scary, as they didn't look real enough, which is a real shame. But, I still loved this film. I give it 8.5 out of 10.

I just saw it today finally. It's definately more Omega Man than Last Man On Earth. On the whole, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

Looking forward to seeing it. I get a feeling to play a slightly ignorant "28 Days Later" card, but that's no bad thing, as the general concept is brilliant and versatile. I notice darkelastics comment on the CGI, and clips I've seen back that up. Computer detail has got more and more amazing, yet the physical motions still carry no weight or inertia as the real subjects would.
