Mine would have to be 'The BFG' by Roald Dahl. You can keep your Dunes and Space Oddyseys!

I may have another crack at it again- though I need to buy a new copy of Dune, as one I lent out never came back... Oh well... Has anyone else read the Cities in Flight series byJames Blish? Very interesting read, but I found it quite depressing as well. Yeah, I've got those on my book shelf. A really good series. Anyone read, "Of Time and Stars"? I can't remember who wrote it, but it was about an exodus from a sun about to go supernova. The men all had pet familiars that were these little parasitic friendly snakes made of goo whom no one could decide if they were technically alive or not, and the women had to get over the fact that it was no longer a matriachy like on the old planet, whilst at the same time having to be patient with the men for being a bit stupid. It was really good, pulpy, but well written. Dang, who wrote it?

hmmm i think it was arthur c. clarke That's the title of one of Clarke's short story collections, but there's no story with the title "Of Time and Stars" in the collection. Poul Anderson has a short story collection entitled "Time and Stars", which also lacks a story with that title.

Another one that I forgot was Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”; it’s a really good book if you can find a good translation. “The Metamorphosis” gave me nightmares.
I’ve also been looking for a good translation of “The Planet of The Apes”, I wish Tim Burton had gone back to the book with his version. The only version that ever did anything from the original book was the cartoon.

The ending of Tim Burtons version was along the same lines of the original book, though there were the usual liberties with the rest of the story.

Well folks- I'm on God Emperor of Dune again- and I'm committed to finishing it this time- no matter how dull all the politics get,
Though I must say, in my current re-reading of the series, I'm "getting" much more of it than I have before- as well as getting more out of it. It's got everything- religion, politics, war, social politics, sex, drugs, fremen and giant worms!!! And it does- especially right now- seem to have a few similarities with the oil supply in the middle east and all of the global politics around that...

I remember when the 2nd gulf war started and I saw an interview with an American NCO who had 'Shai-Halud' written across his helmet.
And if I remember rightly Saddams elite troops were known as the Faydaeen, which is disturbingly close Feydakeen who were Paul's bodyguard.

The truly greatest books of all time would have to be Robota(Doug Chiang) and the Bone series(Jeff Smith).
