Nice. We can only hope that it's as good or close to as good as Life on Mars. Time will tell.

Yeah i did. Gene Hunt as Tufty the Squirrel. Class! "I call a dream Diana Dors and a bottle of chip oil!" LOL ;D I liked the temp DCI it was that bloke from Alien 3 and Phantom Menace. Also did you notice that instead of messages TV's and telephones hes now geting them direct from people now. He's close to waking up now. Be interesting how they handle his return to 2007, that girl really likes him a lot so you can expect tears form the last episode.

Ashes to Ashes,
Funk to funky.

lol that Diana Dors line was class. Yeah, the last episode should be pretty emotional - she'll be a wrinkly when/if he wakes up in 2007. I know age shouldn't be a barrier, but that would just be silly!

A bit late, I know, but I just started watching series one of 'Life on Mars' on DVD. I'm four episodes in, so far. It really isn't what I expected... it's much, much better. A nostalgic show in which the nostalgia isn't the be-all and end-all of it. It's a fish out of water tale... and I don't think it paints that rosy a picture of those days (although the 70's laydeez do seem to have something about them! ). Sure, I get a kick out seeing stuff from the 70's (I turned 6 in '73, and remember quite a few things I've seen on the show), but there's so much more to it than that. I'm sure I had curtains like those the young Sam had when the older Sam visits to finds the house empty! I also remember trouble with power cuts... I had to do my homework by candlelight a few times. Anyway, the show has really human characters, good storylines, 'Sweeney' attitude, humour, pathos and a dash of the surreal in one awesome bundle. And some pretty decent music used too (although the theme tune used the 2nd episode onwards is bloody awful! What were they thinking?). Watching how the clashes of the two distinct methods of policing affect the characters is fascinating stuff. I found myself almost forgetting they were in the 70's at times, the stories are that good, then something happens to Sam to remind you and shocks you all over again. Brilliant. Essential telly... and there's few shows I would say that about, these days. After four hours of the show, I'm quite shocked as to how much things have changed over the years, actually. But that's the point, isn't it? I will definitely be buying the second series DVD when that's released later this month. Oh, I remember seeing Watneys Party Sevens about but didn't they explode on opening if you weren't careful? I'm assuming this was the point behind the two screwdriver/hammer interface thing shown in one of the episodes. They'd disappeared before I was anywhere near drinking age. Also, the test card girl creeps me out when she pops up! Lastly, I'm not sure I get the point of why they will move to the 80's for 'Ashes to Ashes'. Seems like a cash in on the nostalgia thing that probably guarantees it being a success. But, Gene Hunt is such a great character, I'm sure it will be worth a look. I think things will look even bleaker for Gene then, in that policing was changing a lot then (my Dad was an old school copper like Gene Hunt... and he told me once that he was made to feel like a dinosaur by the force he served for 30 years, by that point).

I think the reason they moved the sequal to early 80's is because its now Gene Hunt whos the fish out of water because it was then policing all started to change.

Yes, indeed. Nobody reveal any spoilers from the final episode until Nerfy can catch up otherwise he'll be inconsolable!
Glad you're enjoying it - knew you would.

I've been informed it's on BBC4 at 21.00 tonight RB. I've been dumbfounded by the whole thing. I really didn't expect the writing to be that good. It's been my mission to forsake everything else in my life for the last year and a bit, just so I didn't miss any episodes. I've even gone as far as downloading Gene Hunt ring tones onto my phone. SPOILER He must have secretly enjoyed his time there otherwise he wouldn't have gone back. That or he just wanted to get to grips with Annie. Not a massive surpise ending but well played out. Just thought the 'boring' aspect of the modern day life was overplayed a bit. Found this too. Explains a lot. blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ianwylie/2007/04/life_on_mars_the_answers.html

Thanks for that - I got to watch the ending last night and I was not disappointed. Absolutely brilliant. I was a little worried by half way through that it was going to end terribly, but it didn't phew! What a fantastic and fitting end to the best TV show in years.
That was a great link too with interesting insights into it.
