Warning: Large images ahead - please do not kill your internet looking at them. Anyway, I decided I would build a small fleet. This is what I came up with. Obviously they're not fully finished yet - there's still AA guns and stuff to be added but that can happen in time. Also they're still a little blocky which I will have to change. Anyway please enjoy them (Also they're not correctly to scale either - I just upsized them in order for people to see them properly). Images RemovedThese were also made with a future movie in mind which explains an odd mix of ships such as Old/Attack/Heavy battleship.

Wow! Great work, CT! It's nice to see some more of your lovely 3D artwork. That's a nice little fleet you're building up there... I hope they're not planning on attacking my Martians any time soon. There's some good detail there - they're certainly coming along really nicely, and I can't wait to see them when they're done. It's a nice range of different ships - so seeing them all in a movie would certainly be interesting. Keep up the good work. ^^

Yes, good work and all. But the Missile Submarine looks exactly like the Missile Boat. Is that intentional?

Yes, good work and all. But the Missile Submarine looks exactly like the Missile Boat. Is that intentional? Actually that's not even my sub. That's just the same ship I accidentally put in twice. Edit: All fixed.

Ah, I see. Whoa, when you scroll down this page really fast, it looks like it's one ship changing shape really fast, like in a flip movie or whatever it's called.

Preforms necromancy to bring thread back from the deadThe last time anything was posted in this was well over two years ago...man in forum terms, I think that's called a "bloody long time ago". Anyway, rather than start a new thread I may as well continue with this one. Since I first posted in here, I have modified the ships further and they are no longer the blocks they once where. Most look like this: Some I never got around (or were bothered) to upgrade. But, texturing still remains a problem without a doubt. Mr G introduced me to Ambient Occlusion which I admit, until he mentioned it I had no idea about - I would never have guessed to look it up because I didn't even know that's what it was called! However, now it's time to come to grips with this, so I've decided that before I texture my Dalek, I'll get some practice in with my ships. They are perfect, they're blocks, no real tricky bits - or so I thought. Anyway, here's the diary of my head beating texturing attempts. I'm going to try the battleship I posted an image of above, and see where that goes. So I'm doing the main turrets first. I have a metal texture I downloaded quickly. Here's the gun with a shader backed by MAYA's ambient occlusion. So the modeling of the gun I'm quite happy with, most importantly it looks like a gun. Texturing is another thing though, here it is with the texture applied. As you can see, it's not the greatest (I'm going to be the first one to admit that), I'm going to start searching for a new metal texture, however if anyone comes across something they think might work well please let me know. Hopefully I can find something good.

Not bad. But, being the naval warfare buff that I am, I can't help but to give you a couple of pointers on the gun turrets. First, the turret's barbette looks much too narrow to support the turret itself. So I'd say that the barbette (by the way, a barbette is the circular form (or in this case, conical) directly beneath the turret that allows for the turret's rotation) should simply be widened almost to the extent that the barbette is as wide as the turret itself. Secondly, the guns need apertures to enable the guns to raise or lower. These are typically oval in shape. Or, you can make canvas coverings in place of the oval-shaped apertures. Below is an image you may find useful for the canvas. But other than those two pointers I made, looks like good progress to me.

Although it's been a while, thanks for the advice Relyt, I've modified the turrets more, the barbette was increased in size though you might not be able to tell from the images below, I'll probably make them even bigger. I also changed the front of the turret, to allow it to move. Additionally, I've slowly started to texture it. It needs much more work, it's only a very small and modest beginning, and I think it will come out looking rather poor myself, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere hey. Edit: I've modeled and textured a new bow and stern, which work much better for this battleship than the older one did.
