Thanks, Poyks! You are a legend, by the way. I remember that characteristic of Superglue from my Airfix and Warhammer 40K days.
Today I will paint the machine in its base colours and start cutting the panels to fit.
Anim8tr, there will be more photographs soon...

Thanks, Jonatan. The other day, I bought some spray paint for the machine and set about painting it.
The black paint (Wilko brand) went on to the body well nd dried quickly (as the wood is absorbent and all that), so I could set about adding the armour to the thorax - I replaced the hammered single piece I had been making with four separate panels attached to the various sides. It now looks rather good!
The head covering is not done yet. I'm probably going to make it out of three or four pieces of aluminium, bent nicely into shape and either glued or nailed (or maybe screwed with tiny screws) to the wood.
Also, I bought a Plasti-Kote chrome-effect spray paint for the legs. It didn't work - the nozzle had been manufactured incorrectly. I went back to the shop and changed it. The second one worked, and it's given the legs a lovely sheen. Obviously, the flatter the surface, the chromier the effect. It's made the glued area on the legs look a bit like welds, which is nice!
I have improved the heat-ray generator by adding a spiral of thinner, silver wire around the coppery tentacle, and a three-pronged piece to the funnel a la the sketches.
More to come, and some pictures eventually!
