I know the main objective was London, but why didn't the Martians attack down towards Southhampton or Liverpool? ??

I've always assumed that those who attacked were an 'expeditionary force' who's primary mission was to take London and, therefore, paralyse the Empire. Once that had been acheived they may have begun to spread out in all directions. Perhaps there may have been more cylinders to follow. Trouble is, we'll never know because they died before they had the chance to do anything else.

Hmmm, yeah, it's a shame. I allways thought the Narrator could have saved himself alot of trouble(but it would also ruin the story ) if he and his wife had just headed due south, since the Martians headed north. They they could have riddden out the war in comfort at Plymouth

Indubitably! What what? That's not Cricket!
*that was me being "british" in a mildly offense/comical NZ way, please don't be offended by the offensiveness*

Conquer London, the heart and soul of the world's largest empire, and in the process eliminate Wells's real target - the Victorian social order.

I think hitting everywhere geographically was the overall plan from the outset. Obviously they died out as the book reveals, thus, the plan backfired and never really got off the ground.

I know the main objective was London, but why didn't the Martians attack down towards Southhampton or Liverpool? They were intelligent beings. Why would they go to those toilets?
