It's a funky machine, but I think it may have a struggle walking on soft ground. I like the round hood aperture, that looks cool.

Given that the martians are from a planet with hard, dry soil, I don't think they'd have given much thought to walking in wet and/or soft soil.
I'll take "funky" as a compliment.
And if you look closely at the round aperture in the hood, you can see that the inspiration was the pupil in an eye. The hood is also shaped as an eye appears in the eyelids.

I do like your Martian fish at the top of the page ;D just kidding. Talk us through your design. The circular part at the front is the cockpit, but what are the curved square things either side of it? I must admit I had not noticed the eye symbolism until you pointed it out, but it's a good idea.
On the whole I like your design but I think your upper leg section is a little too thin, it doesn't look very robust. But that is my only criticism.
Nice bit of work and so quick too, Well done. ;D

I like it. Good work Relyt, it would be nice to see a few sketches of it with some scenery.

I love the design, I really do, but I *think* I see Poyksie's point. A foot like that might be an issue in soft ground. I'd give them a bit more credit for at least some kind of reconnaissance. Despite the fact they forgot germs . The Crystal Egg would probably tell them alot... if you take that idea as part of the story (and seeing as Wells wrote that short story, I do). We know that they could perambulate freely in the sea... that to me would say that they had a proper 'foot' on the end of the 'leg' or they would, perhaps, sink into whatever bottom there was there. Also, surely Mars might also have sand dunes, banks or whatever that may be a problem for feet like those. Despite being a generally 'dry' world. Perhaps that's why Jeff Wayne's lot gave the feet (and other things) a make over when they were working on the cgi for the shows. But that isn't, of course, an indicator. I may be wrong but that's my pennorth. Feel free, anyone, to disagree

I have to agree I'm afraid. The Martians had been observing or world, they must have known what to expect, when we send a lander to another world, Mars or the Moon we survey the land prepare for the conditions, yes we get it wrong sometimes but the Martians were smarter than us, they would have come equipped for the terrain I'm sure. Take your ideas from nature, even a small, light-weight critter like a fly or a spider spreads the load by using a foot, a massive and heavy machine like a Martian tripod would be up to it's knees in mud in no time without a foot to spread the load. Here's an idea, reject it if you want, it's only a suggestion.

Hmm. I see what you guys mean. Granted, my machine's foot would about as well as a high-heeled shoe would in wet cement. I might be able to come up with a solution.
In the mean time, I'll give everyone the tour.
As stated previously, the hood is shaped like a human eye with a circular viewport inspired by a pupil. Under the left side, the cylindrical thing with a hemispherical bottom is, I imagine, a sort of thermal imaging targeting device for the heat ray or black smoke. This operates much the same way as radar would in finding a target in modern warfare. Under the right side, the long bulge is where the black smoke canisters are stored, since I like to think that tripods would be designed before the invasion took place. Another example is how the basket is, again, fitted into the body instead of simply hanging on the machine. The two small projections right under the viewport are small searchlights. It would only make sense to have a method of seeing things in the dead of night that the thermal imaging device could not pick up. To the right of the aperture is simply a loudspeaker. "Aloos" and "Ullas" had to come out of something. The heat ray is, again, atop the hood, in the style of 1953. It's tough to see, but below the heat ray atop the hood is a hatch for the weapon to be stowed while not in use. And honestly, the two curved affairs to the upper right and left of the aperture, well I have no idea what those are. I just thought they should be there. Maybe they can emit steam. The hood is connected to the torso by a ball-socket joint to enable it to move in almost any direction. The leg joints are also ball-socket, but of a different design. For some reason I thought they should look like the opening of a trombone. Also, clearly there are struts for the legs to move them. The tentacles, I hoped, would have been better. I tried drawing them not as black lines, but as the tentacle I designed, which was segmented. I posted the concept in the ultimate fighting machine thread. I tried to draw them like that, but they ended up sloppy and too thick for my taste. Lastly, the feet. I actually did think about making feet that would cope with soft terrain. But I couldn't think of anything and I just decided to go with these. Like I said, I'll try to come up with something. If I can't, then I'll modify the feet you see now.
Again, thanks for the patience. I know two years ago I promised it for Christmas, and it's been one delay after another. But I'm glad I did it.

*Sigh* "What is it with me and breaking my promises? I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. I mean, I know it'll be a lot of work and I'm still in the thinking stage. But on the other hand, my previous works don't seem to do justice to my abilities. To top it off, I've made so many of them. They haunt me..." -From the one-sided arguments of Relyt.
Alright, I'll do it...
I'm making another tripod.

Made sufficient progress today. Finally settled on the general shapes for the head and torso. Also designed an actual neck between them instead of a mere joint. Still in the design stages though.

I would suggest sturdier legs than your last one and feet to spread the load.

It'll have feet, but I'm sticking with thin legs, since I like those best.

Probably not a good idea to hold your breath for this. Knowing my speed (or lack of) on these things, you might suffocate.

Here's a painting of your Number 16 design, I held my breath for the 5 minutes it took me to do. ;D I still think your legs are too thin!..... and so are your tripods.
