Yeah love it. I see it as a sort of prequel too.

Any wotw fan should read it if they haven't seen it before, It's surreal in an enchanting way, sets interesting parallels to human society, and some of the descriptions of the creatures is fascinatingly uncanny! Definitely reads as a kind of prequel.

It is a really great little story. I first descovered it when I picked up a book of several Wells short stories... and it is good. Quite fun to read, too. I like the way that it introduces us to a second kind of Martian, the winged ones, as well.
That cover picture is very interesting - I've never seen it before. Thanks for the link, Bayne. ^^

[glow=red,2,300]Actually I suspect that while Wells deliberatly inserted ambiguity, one of his trademarks, I think the wings were mechanical.[/glow]

Mechanical wings would make sense. Yeah... It'd be really cool to have a pair of mechanical wings... *goes off to 'borrow' a pair from the Martian storeroom* ;D

Wow - those are a great idea! They would definitely make an awesome addition to a Halloween costume, that's for sure. ;D Maybe I'll also have a go at making something like that one day, using the tips on those websites. It'd probably come out looking awful though, since I've never made anything like that before, but the only way to learn is to try, right...?

I just went to see it, and wow the image is awsome. There is always something new that i see or read or ear that bring me back to the basic, War Of The Worlds. Chantale.

'The Crystal Egg' was a good story and I also see it as a prequel to 'War of the Worlds'. Another short story of Wells is about a comet that heats up the world, I'm not sure how it was called. Perhaps 'In The Days of the Comet'? Don't know for sure. This story could be seen as an alernate 'War of the Worlds', it features Ogilvy and it implies that Martians sent the comet toward us.

This story could be seen as an alernate 'War of the Worlds', it features Ogilvy and it implies that Martians sent the comet toward us. In the Days of the Comet is a novel, not a short story. It does not feature Ogilvy; I just did a text search on the online version, and the word "Ogilvy" doesn't appear anywhere in the novel. In any case, a story like Comet involving Ogilvy cannot be reconciled with WOTW; that is, it cannot occur in the same time-line. Ogilvy was killed in WOTW, so it cannot occur afterwards; and Comet features a great change to society, so it cannot occur before WOTW. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bayne: Thanks for the link to the "Crystal Egg" illo! Looks like a good one for me to use if/when I ever get around to doing the "Crystal Egg" section of my WOTW FAQ.

I just read it recently. I have to say I enjoyed it, particularly the glimpses and hints of the impending invasion, which were rather tantalizing (especially the giant metallic "insect"). Now, where to find some of those wings...
