When I was away I got to read some of an H. G. Wells short story called "The Star", which I think we WotW fans will find interesting for numerous reasons.
* Ogilvy, the astronomer from WotW, is referred to briefly (or the character in "The Star" is his direct prototype, since that story came first).
* It is a post-apocalyptic story, set on the premise of a star almost striking the earth and killing a large percentage of the population. I found it to be the first story in that genre that I really liked.
* Some Martians appear, but I am not sure if they are the same type of Martians as in TWotW. They seem a little less aggressive in this story.

Yes, if I remember correctly, the Martians are just observers of the near impact. If you also like 'The Time Machine' you might be interested in this sort story by Wells 'The Chronic Argonauts'. gaslight.mtroyal.ca/chronarg.htm

I'll give TCA a read as soon as I can.
Just wondering, which came first, The Star or WotW? I believe The Star came first, bur I'm not sure.

No, the other way around, 'The Star' was published in 1913, 15 years after 'TWotW'

Oh, thanks for clearing that up.
What's Ogilvy doing in "The Star", then? Did he "get better", to refrence Monty Python? Or is it a different Ogilvy?

Either "The Star" happened before the invasion, or the two stories are not related.

Hmm. That is possible, but it is intriguing that Ogilvy (or at least his name) was apparently recycled from WotW and that both characters with that name are astronomers. What I'm unsure about is whether the two are supposed to be the same person or not.

As Relyt said, it's probably a short prequel to TWotW and the same could be said about The Crystal Egg.

Thank you! Are there any other connections between "Star" and WotW?

You've read them both, you tell me. Well, I saw both Ogilvy and the Martians in there. That's pretty much it. But I haven't got a chance to read it more carefully yet. But I will soon. ;D

As Relyt said, it's probably a short prequel to TWotW and the same could be said about The Crystal Egg. That's actually a fairly interesting theory, since it implies that Ogilvy survived the apocalypse caused by the star only to be killed by the Martians later on. Meaning that his survival skills apparently weren't always as poor as they were in WOTW. ;D

I guess Ogilvy evolved into an Oldgilvy.
