I've been interested in seeing this remake of Infernal Affairs for some time and managed to see if last night.
In a nutshell, two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.
I thought this was very well directed by Scorsese with excellent performances from a huge ensemble cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicolson, Matt Damon, Mark Walberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Alec Baldwin. The plot twists and turns were executed perfectly, keeping the viewer gripped and guessing.
I'm not a big fan of DiCaprio, but I thought he gave a solid performance, as did his nemesis, Damon. Nicolson was brilliant as ever and more psychotic than I think I have ever seen him (but with some brilliant human touches that kept his character believable). The tension is unrelenting and the violence severe(but not gratuatous, in my opinion) and the ending is a real shocker.
Overall, one of the best (if not the best) remake ever.
