This is our most recent Production - Hometime. A short film by Orkney Movie Group commisioned by Orkney Islands Council for The Community Safety Partnership. This is a Road safety fictional film, made for viewing in Orkney schools. As a young boy makes his way home on the school bus his mind is focused more on his mobile phone than his safety, the consequenses of which become all too apparent. When we were in the preliminary discussions about this film we gave them two rough prices; option 1 - the film made with our equipment, option 2 - the film made with rented professional equipment. They chose option 1. www.vimeo.com/447736 Please watch and review. thank you.

Mrs Poyks and I watched it, and we'll start with criticisms first. The script feels a little bit weak and predictable, and makes the second half a little bit strung out (because you kind of know the outcome). On a positive note, the acting, camera work and direction is very good! (The only thing I would want to cut is the teacher on stage telling the kids to be quiet, it disturbed the flow a little, and looked a little bit contrived.) The kids and the "Mum" acting was very good indeed, and looked very professional, you should be very proud of the actors!! Good work, you're clearly making big advances with your art, and I look forward to the next project.

I have some time, now, so I'll give my full POV. I'd agree with Brendan... but we are talking about a road safety film. So there is only so far it can go. If it were me, I'd make it shorter and punchier. This is beacause we know what the typical attention span is these days. The poor copper looked a bit lost, and the kids were, understandably, not interested. So the film actually made a good point. Look at those links I made a while back to the 'Apache' films... those scared the crap out of me as a kid. And, therefore, they did the job. Now, 20 or 30 years on... do we need subtlety or outright mayhem? I'm not sure. I just know what worked for me. But, at the end of the day, your film got the message across. The lead kid was great and his, potential girlfriend also was very good. Pass on my congrats to them, please (were all your actors Orkneites? I'm assuming so ). I would have made it a little more graphic. It's a lesson kids need to be taught, after all. That's the way things are going, nowadays. BUT, nice work, from a filmmaking point of view, anyway. I couldn't fault the camerawork, the lighting and the acting and all that. You guys are getting quite prolific. And rightly so. You've done some great stuff. Is there a full length feature on the cards? All in all, a good job, DE! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your reviews.
It ended longer than we wanted, but we felt it needed to for the whole package to work and for the ending to be got, and that is the most important thing. When deciding how to do this, we thought the best way - as this was personal to Orkney schools - was to make it as real as possible so the kids felt that this could actually happen. Also, we weren't sure that a graphic accident would work with TV being as it is today, so we went for a feeling of loss for the kid instead with the accoumpanyment of certain graphic scenes (Accident, Hospital, etc.).
Yes Nerf they are Orcadian, once again to make it personal to Orkney.
It takes us all our time to make 10-20 minute shorts, and seen as though we work for a living, a feature length is out of the question. But, as a group, we will keep building and progress as filmmakers.
Thank you again for taking time to review.
We will have Dark Legends for you sometime in the New Year.

Just to bring you up to date with what has been going on with this film. It had its Press Night this Monday evening - 14/01/08, which went extremely well (there will be a report and photos on our website soon). We have had nothing but positive reviews for this film and it has been decided that it will go Nationwide and not just be used for Orkney and Shetland. I was interviewed for BBc Radio Orkney, which was aired on Tuesday - 15/01/08 - and have had pictures taken at the Press Night, which will no doubt be in both local papers this week. Also, the film had a report in the local news on STV tonight - 16/01/08 - the link is below if anyone wants to watch it. www.stv.tv/content/news/local/north/display.html?id=opencms:/news/north_scotland/DVD_warns_pupils_of_school_bus_dangers
