Totally agree. As the article states he is 69 now, probably got the right man some 16 years to late. yea the series has started running here, and I watched the first two episodes of the american version online. I'm disappointed that Colm Meany isn't there, but you know I love Harvey Keitel.
I didn't think it was too bad. I mean, it's almost pointless for me to watch it since they are doing the same events in the same order as the original, so it's not like I don't know where it's going. Mainly they just shifted all the cultaral references to the US at that time, as opposed to London at that time.
I dunno. I'm going to give it a little more time before I decide if I want to follow through or give up.

Much as I love HK, I think this is just a pointless exercise.
The original was best. Why can't they just leave it at that for fucks sake?
This idea of the US and the UK taking ideas from each other and nationalising them is so old hat now. Why do they bother?
We're familiar enough with each others cultures for this kind of thing not to be necessary. Surely?
I mean... do Americans still think we all wear bowler hats, ride on red buses through a pea souper, live in the 19th century and talk Australian like Dick Van Dyke? If they do it's not our fault.
Alas, it's the US suits thinking that our drama doesn't fit that seems to be at fault here. They love the ideas but it ain't got enough of mom's apple pie in it. Or something. God knows we've swallowed enough of their vomit since I can remember without having to make it ours. Why do they feel that they have to make our stuff theirs? Arrogance? Probably.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not against the American people at large, far from it, I know many Americans happily watch our shows that we offer in their original format. It's those pricks they put in charge of primetime TV over there I have a problem with.
They have no faith on their own countrymen's intelligence, it seems.

The problem is that the average "stupid american" can't handle most european shows. So US companies dumb them down and repackage them for consumption by middle america.
I have a friend who loves british shows, but has to watch them with subtitles because she "can't understand what they are saying".

Did you ever see the show AS TIME GOES BY? remember the bit where Lionel's novel was being made into a tv movie for the US? yea..it's a lot like that....
