Anyone who lived through the Cold War years may remember the chilling BBC TV play based on nuclear war hitting Britain. I've recently watched it on DVD, and we have just watched it again. It's every bit as stunning as when it was first shown all those years ago, and the acting and production is stunning!
Awesome viewing even today!

Where do I start?
I could write a whole essay on it to be honest from a humane point of view & let's face very few wars are humane when it comes down to it....
I was a naive teenager back then in the early 1980's and to be honest I had no clue as to how close we actually were to a nuclear war. No clue whatsoever & I freely admit I was so naive....
The film is vary harrowing and is based on effects of a nuclear attack on Sheffield and the after effects spanning 13 years.
Without giving too much away there is 1 main character and a lot of well known actors/actresses involved in the sub-plots.
I won't spoil the film any more for those who haven't yet seen it but I must warn you all of the following:
1) It is Disturbing & distressing. 2) Sqeamish in parts 3) Makes you feel sick and other from suffering near motion sickness with Cloverfield, I have never watched a film and felt physically sick in my life!!! 4) Watching the film will probably scar you for life but as a result of watching it you will realise how so near we were to a nuclear war back then and also how catrastophic the effects of a nuclear strike would be if God forbid it ever happened to us.
One thing is for sure I will never forget the effects of the film & I suggest that all the world's politicians watch this and then perhaps they will think about any nuclear bombing as believe me, bunkers do NOT save lives!
I used to think that the CND brigade were crazy hippies but after seeing this my point of view has altered immensely & yours will do as there must never be a nuclear war on this earth.... I'll leave it at that for now...
There is a very good synopsis about the film on Wiki & whilst I hated watching it for the reasons above think that we should ALL see it, squeamish or not!

Thing is despite the fall of the Soviet Bloc the nuclear threat is still there. Sooner or later it smaller nations will get hold of the bomb, and Gawd help us.

North Korea & Iran are the worries at the moment I think as no one knows just how many bombs they have.
Russia will always be a loose cannon and we do need them on our side for the sake of peace.
Maybe I'm wrong there, who knows.....

We must watch that then Rusti. Cheers for that Jericho is a town thats in a valley isolated from most of the USA. The series tells of an attack on the USA and the town trying to survive. They get raids from rogue soldiers, other towns desperate for what Jericho has. To cap it all there is a side story which suggests that the attack on the USA may not have come from another nation...

I've had 'Threads' on DVD for quite a while, and I'm one of those who is interested in Cold War stuff, as many here will know. If you 'like' that, try to get hold of a DVD called 'Protect and Survive'. It was released by DD video a couple of years back and has ALL of the 'Protect and Survive' films prepared by the government in the 1970's. All of them are narrated by the late, great Patrick Allen and are chilling stuff indeed. The DVD also offers other films made, between the 50's and the 70's, which tell how things would go should there have been a nuclear war. Also, there are books I can recommend to the interested (although they are now hard to come by).

Oh and, for an earlier slant, try 'The War Game'. This is also on Youtube in full. Powerful stuff.

Nowadays, surviving wouldn't be any better than going early, I have to agree. Having said that, from the books I've read that were published in the 80s (see 'War Plan UK' by Duncan Campbell) even then survival would have not have been so great for the ordinary folk. Our main threat now is from terrorism. Dirty bombs, that kind of thing. As such, I think any threat would be localised, to an extent.... major cities coming under fire from a coordinated terrorist attack. As a whole, the country would suffer less than when there was emnity between us and the Ruskies (due to our relations with the US... we were, at one point back then the biggest US aircraft carrier in the world). But it wouldn't be any prettier.
