Beginning to think this one was a figment of my imagination as I have not seen a copy of this since I gave mine away 20 odd years ago.
I picked up a copy of this book in 1986 while in Inverness and I remember the cover stated it had won the Science Fiction award in 1985.
The story is set in ancient China and begins with a village hiring a wise man to find out why the children are taking ill during the silk harvest and from there follows the adventures of the wise man as he pursues a cure called " the root of knowledge".
Highly recommended and an original story, regretably I have never seen this published or reprinted since.
