I,ve just been watching ALIENS again after the longest while and while it's in no doubt a great movie i still have issues with it turning the Zenomorph's into nowt but cannon fodder but anyway... As the scene unfurled set in the medic lab where Ripley and Newt are trapped and menaced by a pair of pissed off Facehuggers i was taken back to late 1986 and my second viewing of ALIENS at the local fleapit. I knew what was coming up unlike it would seem the vast majority of the audience that night and just casually looking around at my fellow patrons i noticed a young woman who it seemed was trying to crawl under her seat in fear, that to me (and the reason for this long winded post) summed up for me the sheer power and fear Cinema can and sometimes still can instill in people. I,ll give ALIENS credit, even now it's special FX's can still run rings around any CGI bollo and makes me pine for it seems the disappearing art of model making. Anyway needed to get that off me chestbuster, be great to hear of other examples of the power of cinema.

Totally agree at how powerful it can be. Aliens is a huge favourite of mine. It is also a shame that a lot of film makers are getting lazy in their over use of CGI - I've moaned about that in many films over the past few years (Hulk and Van Helsing are two that immediately spring to mind).
Jaws is another film that has amazing effects on people when seen on the big screen (and little screen for that matter). The "We're gonna need a bigger boat" scene and the severed head are just two examples.

CGI is all well and good if used properly as with anything.
Ive actually met the man who designed the Cooling Tower in Aliens and the man who made the Pulse rifles and Smart Guns (ive actually held the real ones in the film) so ive seen that craftsmanship up close. Its a very forward looking movie that doesnt use CG.

I have my proof at last!

That is some bloody good exciting music! Just listen to all of the percussion parts for a start! If you listen to the bit with the horns at 01:43 its almost identical to the horn sounding bit on JW's WOTW album where the artilleryman screams 'we'll be on top again!!!
