Anyone (in the UK) catch this on BBC1 last night? It's sort of Time Team crossed with Indian Jones and Tomb Raider (for want of a better description of a show that lacks the exotic locations and most of the action of the last two). I'd seen the ads for this and thought I'd give it a go. First surprise was the announcement at the start that it was created and written by the blokes who brought us the excellent 'Life on Mars' and the nearly as good 'Ashes to Ashes'. And, as the show went on, it showed. Mysoginist character present? Check... although he wasn't the one in charge this time. Tough woman character (in charge)? Check. Obvious signs of a recurring theme and backstory that will be played out over the series? Check. Social issues underlying the plot? Check. Dozy sidekicks? Check. Don't get me wrong... I actually quite liked it. I struggled with the concept of a team of mismatched Wessex University archeologists trying to beat a bunch of demented modern-day Knights Templar (led by a slimy James Bond Villain/ TV evangelist type) to the True Cross being sexy, though. Which is evidently what the BBC were aiming for. I think it was just all a bit more bonkers than I thought it would be. A beheading by sword, secret passages in the tough woman's flat and a massive underground chamber under a dovecot filled with 2000 year old crosses just overloaded my poor bonce a bit. Mad as a box of Poyks's! If I've gotten over it, I'll see what they have in store next week.
