Ok mega reply time...
I'm proud to say that I have now made my way through the list and have now seen every single film on it! every one! I was surprissed to get hold of some of them i.e. brotherhood (korean) but now I can pop my clogs happily in the knowledge that I have seen all the films I need to
Here is a quick review of each film I hadn't seen before this list was put together. I've been writihng each one straight after watching the film itself...
1. Alien - Seen it before
2. Being John Malkovich - Seen it before
3. Belleville Rendezvous - Seen it before
4. Bugsy Malone - Seen it before
5. Empire of the Sun - Seen it before
6. Gladiator - Seen it before
7. The Italian Job (Original version) - Seen it before
8. Philadelphia - Seen it before
9. Zulu - Seen it before
10. Monty Python's Life of Brian - Seen it before
11. Get Carter (original)Just this minute finished watching it, after not knowing a single thing about this film other than Michael Caine was in it. Wow didn't expect it to end like that! Quite a shock. Great film but with all the lovely, lovely, lovely boobies and bums flying about all over the place not the safest film to watch on your monitor at work!
Michael Caine is up there with my top 2 favourite actors of all time, along with Tom Hanks. He played a great hard-man in this film and it kept me fixed on the screen all the way through (even though I had to watch it in two halves due to my measly 1hour lunch break
I love the style of 70s films like this. The crappy sound and great cars makes for a film experience like no other time period.
I loved the expression and reaction of the old lady next door when Jack came out of the house holding the shotgun totally butt-naked haha!
Thanks to whoever suggested this one, great film
Mmm.... boobies.
12. Lost in TranslationWhat a wonderful film
I really enjoyed that. I had no intention of watching this film before this list came about as I read the proverbial book by its cover and looked at the movie poster and decided I didn't like it before even seeing a trailer or reading the plot.
I now have a new found respect for Scarlet Johansson. She did a lovely performance in this film although even though she is 25 she looks more like 19 years old to me and the relationship between the 97 year old Bill Murray and her was a little strange at times, but more often than not, just enchanting. The film was extremely funny at points with nothing but Bill Murray's humour and mannerisms seeming fit for the scenes.
I loved the advert director explaining that he wants him to turn left using about 200 words, and also the point where Bill is sitting in the waiting area next to the old Japanese lady trying to work out what she is saying. Great stuff.
His flat relationship between him and his wife was funny (with a pinch of guilt).
It's very likely that I will be buying this on DVD.
13. Key Largo Hadn't the faintest idea about this one before watching it. I dont think I've ever seen Humphrey Bogart in a film before either so that's another actor under my belt, for want of a better phrase
I found it quite amusing actually, which I don't suppose was the intention of the film...... The lasting thought I got from the film was that he was driving the boat back with a big grin on his face like butter wouldnt melt and everything was now going to be ok, completely oblivious of the fact that he is a serial murderer and purposely went out on that trip to kill those mobsters! You bloody wait till the police hear about this mister!
How annoying was that laugh of one fo the mobsters! Aggh! hehe. Ccant really talk about this one too much. It was ok, not really my cup of tea but I would never have watched it had it not been for this list so Im glad it was on there.
14. Blazing SaddlesI'd heard very little about this film other than it was a spoof cowboy film. I wanted to watch it nonetheless. I found it really funny and filled to the eyeballs with typical Mel Brooks style humour. I loved the whole 'poking fun at racism' thing it had going and the look on the faces of the town people when their new black sheriff rode into town on the back of a horse during the welcoming ceremony was priceless! Lots and lots of harmless silliness in this film and that's what it's all about.
Very enjoyable film and a joy to watch...
15. Dr StrangeloveHmm, not bad. Not my favourite of the lot but entertaining nonetheless. I recognised the bit at the end where he's sitting on the nuclear bomb as its falling, riding it like a rodeo horse but I couldn't say where from. I thought this film was going to be about a mad surgeon or something but how wrong I was
Not really got much to say about this film to be honest.
I'm off to watch A Bridge Too Far
16. ScroogedNever really fancied this film, purely because before watching Lost in Translation I never realised how much I like Bill Murray. He's great. His little expressions and contortions he does, they're great.
This film was really good. Pretty much the exact same thing as A Christmas Carol, I realise that it was purposely based upon that story but I expected a bit more of a difference.
I loved the casting of Bobcat Goldthwait as Frank’s psycho ex-employee. I don't think I've ever seen him in a film other than the police academy ones and it was a great surprise.
The speech Frank made at the end was just an amazing piece of writing, it actually made me very slightly emotional towards the end and that's a hard feat to achieve (another instance of that happening is Ricky Gervais' speech in the big brother house on his series 'Extras') Very powerful stuff and a really nice ending to the film..
Also, Karen Allen has one of the most beautiful smiles going, she's gorgeous and none more-so than in the Indie films as Marion.
Anyway, lovely film, well done, as you were....
17. M.A.S.H.Once again I knew nothing about MASH other than is was a war based comedy. I hadn't seen a single regular episode and I didn't even know it was about the hospital section. I started watching it and wasn't that impressed but it certainly grew on me and really quite enjoyed it by the end after getting to know the characters better. I loved the guy on the tannoy getting his words all mixed up each up time an announcement came up.
I did however get to the end of the film thinking ".....So, what was the plot?" It didn't go anywhere! Nothing really happened as much as you could call it the theme of the film. There was peeking in the ladies showers, an American football match, some surgery and that was really it! Quite odd. Ah well another film under my belt and I can safely know what MASH is all about now
(assuming the film mirrored the series in some way)
18. Stand By MeAww I liked that film
A good ol’ buddy film. The ending was a bit of a shame; it wasn’t the happy ending I was expecting. He didn’t see two of them again after a little while and the other got stabbed, nice. I really enjoyed it other than that though, especially the scene when they were crossing the railway bridge not knowing whether a train was going to come or not. Their constant ribbing of their portly friend was quite cruel but at the same time …really funny!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mouth from The Goonies in anything else before so that was good (what has he done recently?!)
This film was really really similar to the first half of Stephen King’s ‘IT’. The relationship between the lads was virtually the same I found. And seeing at the end of the film that this was adapted from Stephen King’s book ‘The Body’ may go some way to explaining that.
I had no idea that Chris was River Phoenix until the credits came up! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of his films, though, that said, as I didn’t know it was him then I could very well have done and not realised it.
Very good film.
19. Shawshank Redemption - Seen it before
20. SpartacusBlimey, having seen Gladiator probably 5-6 times I never realised how much of a rip-off it was of this movie! So many similarities!
Love this film but by 'eck t'was a long one!
This is what you call a 'proper' film. Fantastically made. No special effects, all the people were real, which in some of the fight scene was blooming amazing considering the vast amount of soldiers. Where do they get all those people?!
Never realised that Sparty was played by Kirk Douglas until I saw that distinctive pot-hole in his chin
At the end of the film you are initially, and intentionally, left with a feeling of 'wow, what a guy.. A true hero of the people. But after thinking about it, what exactly did he achieve?
He was an outlaw
He wasn't that good at sword fighting after effectively losing the first duel against the black guy (before He pussied out and went after the royalty).
He skewered his best pal intentionally in a duel later on.
He took thousands and thousands of slaves into battle against the pretty much invisible Roman army and got almost all of them killed in the process, leaving the others to be publicly crucified after he lost the battle.
and freed absolutely no-one as a result apart from his wife and kid. And in-fact that was just the doing of Sempronius Gracchus on the sly so he didn’t even do that himself!
What a loser! lol.
He chose well with the girly though. Very pretty. I would. ;D
Anyway great, great film other than that.
21. Rollerball (original) - Seen it before
22. Pulp Fiction - Seen it before
23. Scarface - Seen it before
24. The ThingHaha that was pretty good!
This was a good old scifi film and it's style rememinded me quite a lot of Close Encounters of a Third Kind, especially when they found the buried spaceship.
The 'Thing' was really original and gross and thankfully not the standard 'human in a costume'
One part of the film was up there with the most ridiculous things I've ever seen in a film. The part where they were trying to revive onew of the Thing's victims by using the defibulator when his rib cage collapsed inwards and turned into a huge mouth complete with piranha-fish style teeth and proceeded to munch on the poor guys hands. Hilarious, stupid and great all in one small package
There are only a select few films that I can stomach Kurt Russels dodgy acting but this one was one of his better ones (Big Trouble in Little China being his greatest
Ohh! armageddon and Something About Mary, thats what that black guy was from!
Great film, I wished I'd have seen it earlier
25. Dawn of the Dead (original) - Seen it before
26. Halloween (original) - Seen it before
27. House on Haunted Hill (original) - Seen it before
28. Leon - Seen it before
29. The Wild BunchWell, all in all, not really my sort of film this, but I cant see the reason so many people say it's a great film. The characters are very believable and the story was really interesting. The old guy with the beard was great
loved his laugh, haha, proper stereotypical old cowboy git. The train sequence was probably my favourite part of the film. Really liked how they all took control of the train without alerting the soldiers in the carriage.
Umm... cant be bothered to type any more so thats y'lot
Taxi Driver next
30. Apocalypse NowI've wanted to see this for years and never got round to it or seen it shown on TV, though I've no doubt it has been.
I really enjoyed this and didn't find it anywhere near as 'weird' as a few people had said it was. Martin sheen was fantastic and this was, I think, the first film I'd seen him in when he was young and it struck me just how much Charlie Sheen is the spitting image of him!
I was surprised at just how many famous people were in it and I was not expecting the great Marlon Brando to pop up as the nutter!
It really does make you think what does actually go on in the wars and whether it’s always just the allies killing the enemies.
The killing of the Ox near the end really shocked me not because they killed it, as that was obvious what was about to happen, but I was expecting them to just stick a spear or two into it not cleave its head clean off in full view of the camera!! Wow, not much shocks me in films but that certainly did.
I feel satisfied that this film lived up to my expectations and I loved the part of Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore played by Robert Duvall where he wouldn't even flinch when bombs were going off all around him, and the fact he was dead set of surfing in the middle of the conflict on the beach! haha. .........wait ....Harrison ford was in it?!?! Colonel Lucas, hmm don't remember him lol
31. A Bridge Too Far...Oh ...well that was a rather large anti-climax! They didn't bleedin' complete the mission! They just said, "We can’t do the last mile" and went home! I want my money back
I loved that film and what an incredibly huge cast! Every other scene there was another big star playing someone else! Even Cliff from Cheers!
Really enjoyed this one even after years of thinking it was actually the sequel to A Bridge Over the River Kwai!
I guess I was wrong haha. Anthony Hopkins was one of my favourite guys in this, mainly due to his posh English accent don't y'know
also when he was running across the battle area unsuccessfully dodging bullets he really reminded me of the end credit sequence of Dad's Army where Captain Manwairing brings up the rear of the squad
Anthony Hopkins
Bob Redford
My name is Michael Caine
James Caan
Sean Connery
Gene Hackman
Lawrence Olivier
Elliot Gould
They couldn't afford that wage packet these days! Just amazing.
Great, great film.
32. The Killing Fields Well thats probably the most watched-in-bits film ever for me. I think it took me about 6 times to get through that! I liked it although I wasnt blown away by it. The ending was really ice when they got back together, and I liked that John Malkovich was in it, he always adds something to films. And his Macgyver/A-Team style passport photo sequence was great
I really comes to you how dangerous the lives of reporters are out in the field, they really are in the thick of it and are never immune to the events that go on. Not sure I'd see this again but I now know what people are talking about if it ever comes up in conversation
33. Midnight Express This was a great film, really enjoyed it, very gritty, very brutal and made me think twice about smuggling my weed again! lol. Not quite sure where his breaking point came from when he snapped an just turned psycho but Im always a lover of film violence so it was still enjoyable
His escape was good
a nice happy ending though getting out of the country without a passport will be rather difficult, even more difficult will be getting back into the USA
34. The Untouchables I completely forgot about writing a review on this one! I saw it a few weeks back now so my memories of it arent quite as sharp as they were. I do however remeber liking it rather a lot. I havent seen that many mob type films and this was really interesting. Kevin Costner did a great job I think and Im not usually that keen on him, I'd consider this his best role to date. I had no real idea who Al Capone was before this and now I have a cleaer idea. De Niro was great playing the ruthless criminal and suited the role really well.
The blood splattered everywhere was great to see for a sick guy like myself
and Im glad they got that annoying little accountant in the lift
Hah! take that! bookworm!
Enjoyable but not something I'd buy I dont think.
35. RoninGreat movie. Really enjoyed it though my understanding of it lapsed towards the end. I don't really get the reference to the Ronin Samurai in relation to the film, I'm a little dim like that. The car chases were amazing! I loved the tunnel sequence. The Irish accents irritated me a little, they sounded a little put-on, I realise they weren't but that was quite distracting to me, ah well that's a moo point anyhow. I was gripped throughout this film despite my slight lapse of plot understanding. Jean Reno always provides an interesting character into his films with his slightly dopey, slightly humorous way about him. I might have to watch this one again at some point to fully get to grips with it all.
37. Dune - Seen it before
38. True Romance - Seen it before
39. Sean of The Dead - Seen it before
40. Hot Fuzz (and why not?) - Seen it before
41. Dracula (1930's) I've always fancied watching this version, and now I have
Loved it! Though I have to say I hven't seebn such wooden acting since that particularly un-rehearsed episode of Muffin the Mule!
The first odd thing about this film I noticed is that there is absolutely no music throughout the entire film. That's certainly an oddity in the world of cinema and I felt it could have benefitted from that.
I actually learnt that vampires can take the form of wolves on the odd occasion. Didn't know that. In recent times/films, werewolves have always been the arch enemy of the vampire not just another one of their forms.
I think the ending was the most understated and unexaggerated finishes I've ever seen.
Van Helsing finds the coffins
Drives the stake through his heart
doesnt go with the man and woman
The End.
...oh, its finished then I guess lol. It's like they ran out of ideas or money and had to finish prematurely.
All in all though I liked it and Im really glad I got to see it at last.
42. The Exorcist - Seen it before
43. From Dusk Till Dawn - Seen it before
44. From Beyond the GraveI was a bit wary before watching this due to the 'yes, really' comment.... And it was a well founded statement really
quite a dodgy film if I'm honest and more like a sequence of short stories melded together one after the other. Filled with corny lines like the guy in the mirror saying in a very deep throaty voice "feeeeed meeeeee" do they really say that? lol. The thing is the guy who bought the mirror seemed incredibly willing to hack up everyone to satisfy this non-existent ghouly he was seeing. The guy in the antiques shop reminded me of the old girl in the antique shop in Last of the Summer Wine
though not quite as persistent with his selling technique
Glad I watched it, but yeah, rather crappy haha.
45. Jaws - Seen it before
46. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Seen it before
47. Saving Private Ryan - Seen it before
48. Schindler's List - Seen it before
49. Blade Runner - Seen it before
50. 2001: A Space OdysseyOK can someone please explain to me what the hell that film was all about? I don't get it! Damn you Stanley!! I like this after seeing The Shining, what was it trying to say?!?! Yeah Jack Nicholson is in an old photo .....AND?! Same here, a baby floats towards Earth .....AND!?!?! What am I missing?
This, along with Apocalypse Now, was one of my 'most wanted to see' film in the list and I just don't get it! A monolith that travels through space teaching apes to use weapons, and makes a high pitch noise and breaks into people's houses and watches them sleep! wtf?!
I did however love the bold use of music that is apparent in all Kubrick films I have seen along with the obligatory flashing images of scared faces makes for a very intense watching experience. I loved the incredibly slow pace of the film too, where it would take forever for the astronaut to travel to the radar dish and they'd the whole thing unedited. I also like that someone has made a film that has zero sound in space! At last! TIE FIGHTERS WOULDN'T BE HEARD GEORGE!!
Along with Tom Cruise's 'Vanilla Sky', I am in that incredibly awkward state of mind where I really love the film and will probably buy it on DVD but at the same time have absolutely no fuggin' idea what it's about!
Ah well glad I've seen it
A bridge too far next!
51. Taxi DriverI tell you what I really feel I've missed out by not having seen that film earlier in my life. Bloody fantastic it was. Can't believe I waited until I was 28 before seeing it. I loved it. De Niro on tip-top form most definitely.. I was expecting a dramatic ending but blimey what a show! didn't expect him to be turned into swiss cheese and more than that I was amazed to see that he survives and lives on to be rendered a hero too! At last I've seen the film that the 'You talkin' to me?' speech comes from! Also, that guy climbing the stairs near the end shouting 'I'll kill you! I'll kill you' that bit has been sampled in a song or something, cant remember what one but it was odd to hear it in the film as I'd heard it so many times before out of context.
I put this film in the same bandwagon as Dog Day Afternoon, its as brutal as that with a similarly psychotic lead character played by an equally brilliant actor.
The music score reminded me of those 1920s detectives in a smokey venitian-blinded office with a dusty dial-phone and a tumbler of scotch on the rocks
Really glad I watched this film. *two thumbs up*
52. Dog Day AfternoonWow, how have I not seen this before!! Awesome film! Stunningly written. Pacino at his best! Now I have something to reference to when John Travolta does his monologue in Swordfish
I loved this film is has gone straight onto my DVD wish list. This is what film making is all about; there was tension, humour, guns, pizza, cops, and blood! All the ingredients of a great film if you ask me
I was really unsure of what was going to happen at the end and I wasn't disappointed...... I hate it when the ending is so obvious that it spoils the film but this one had me guessing right up until it happened. I found the hostages rather calm about the whole thing though and even being kind to wards the robbers at times! Weird lol.
5* from me for this one, great addition to the 100 films list
53. V for Vendetta - Seen it before
54. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life - Seen it before
55. History of the World, Part INot my favourite Mel Brooks film by a long shot but still funny in parts. Knight jumps queen, bishop jumps queen, ...GANG BAAAANG!! Haha. Umm, not much to say about this one to be honest. I liked the Jews in Space trailer they did at the end that was great, and ....I can’t think of anything else to say actually......
Fin.
56. Papillon You know what, Steve Mcqueen should really stop getting himself into these situations. I've now seen him in two films and in both he has been sent to prison and attempts an escape! You'd think he'd learn by now. Or you'd think the justice system would give up sentencing him as he'll just escape anyway! Good film, I think it lost its pace a hell of a lot near the end where he had escaped then turned in by the bitch Nun and was put on that island. I couldn't really see where it was supposed to be going from there and I was also a little confused as to why Dega was acting in that odd way, was it just the result of being alone for so long? but there were others on the same island.
The section where he was on that native indian settlement was very strange indeed, I dont think there was a word spoken in 15-20mins.
They did a great job on making him look decrepid and old as the sentences got longer and longer though I was a little shocked after the 5 year term he served for escaping was over in the time it takes to switch to a different scene. I supoose it was all the same as the past few years in prison so didnt need to show it again.
Good addition to the list.
57. The Deer Hunter - Seen it before
58. Close EncountersI like this one; very, very similar style to ET I found (they're both Spielberg I know, but still....) I found the part where Richard Dreyfuss was going rather loopy and throwing all sorts of materials through his kitchen window to build the mountain in his living room, great scene
Although the special effects weren't up to the technical quality of today's films they were very decent indeed and didn't detract from the film. I felt the aliens at the end were rather generic and non-imaginative but at least they were real people and not cg like directors nowadays would make them. Today's graphics always seem to be the first thought in films and very little thought gone into the plot or characters.
This one is one of those good old films that really stand the test of time I think. I hadn't seen it until now, and 32 years (yes 32 YEARS!) after it was made I really enjoyed it and would watch it again whereas the majority of the films made these days are barely worth the first viewing.
One thing I didn't really enjoy, or rather stuck out to me, was the sound the large spaceship made i.e. the deep tuba sound. It sounded just like a tuba! (Plus other brass/woodwind instruments further down he line) I would have liked it if the sound was adjusted to sound more off-world but hey there you go, cant have it all
Good film
59. Yellow SubmarineI wasn't particularly looking forward to watching this one I have to say. Mainly because I'm not the greatest fan of The Beatles in the first place and partly because I remember a very vague amount of the film from my youth and not thinking it was that good back then.
But, as it is part of the list and I really can’t remember anything about it (other than there's a yellow submarine in it) I sucked it in watched it in it's entirety...
My response to it is that I found it very dated and hasn't carried that well over the years. It reminded me very much of the random silliness of Monty Python animations but with not nearly as much humour or charm. All in all I'm glad I've seen it but only so much that I can say with some authority that I don't like the film rather than presume I don't like it
60. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 - The MovieRight, did I just sit through 1hr 13mins of someone talking over a film? What the hell man! Lol, did this come out in the cinema? If it did I would have been reet ticked off because that's exactly what you DON'T want in a film and that was the POINT of this film? Dear oh dear
Yeah some of the comments were funny in a childish sort of way, like the guy walking through the room which the sound effect of a car zooming past, and the part where another guy is walking amongst the scatter machine parts with one of the three audience making a crunching noise as if he is breaking everything he steps on.
I don't really know whether to talk about this film or film that they were watching, both were pretty awful I have to say and not sure I agree with it being included in this list but each to their own I guess.
I can't say I would watch this one again or recommend to others either.
On with the next film to take the memory away!!!
61. On Her Majesty's Secret Service Ah the long forgotten George Lazenby one. Hmm well all I can say is I can see why they didnt employ him for a second one. That was really pants. He didn't suit the role at all for me. The whole film was packed full of cheese, which sometimes is what you want, but the other actors to play Bond have been able to pull the cheese off whilst still remaining seriously cool, Lazenby was just lame at it. What was with the constant playing of the Louis Armstrong song?! that doesn't suit the James Bond series at all!
There was one thing that impresses me however and that was the section of the skiing scene where he lost a ski after a fall and continued down the mountain on one ski. That was good stuff.
The film was also full of crap sound effects and some even completely out of place. Like at the start the car was skidding around on the sand whilst giving out very distinct tyre screech sounds!! uhhh its sand not tarmac Mr. Sound Editor. I'm really suprised there was an explosion when the bobsleigh crashed at the end after watching all that.
Another dodgy part was when he was hanging on that cable with the cable car coming towards him at literally 5mph the he let go at the last minute and managed to grab onto the bracket without dropping even an inch! the bracket was about 5 feet in front of him!
Ah well I was glad to see that stupid bint got it in the head at the end, James isn't supposed to be married! he's a rogerer of women not a family man, bitch!
The End.
62. Dark StarHaaaahahahaha! The ending!! Very 'Ace Rimmer'
I'd never heard of this film before seeing it so didn't really know what to expect. It was quite entertaining if a little slow. Never before have I seen such little effort gone into making an alien for a film! It was a painted beach-ball with feet!! Haha. Overall it came across to me as, well, rather dodgy and one of those films where you had to be there when it came out to appreciate it fully
What did make me giggle was at the end and the incredibly nonchalant way Dolittle and Talby were discussing how one of them was going to be burnt into a crisp by gliding into the atmosphere of the closest planet!
"When you hit the atmosphere you'll burn! What a beautiful way to die."
".....I guess you're right."
Whaaat?! You’re about to burn!! Panic!! Haha...
Anyway, quite fun if rather naff.
63. The PrestigeWow that was a great film! Really enjoyed that one, just my kind of thing. I’m still amazed by the huge cast! Bowie, Jackman, Caine, Johannson, Bale, Serkis …and that gay German officer from ‘Allo ‘Allo
It had enough twists and turns at the end to satisfy a rollercoaster designer!
I’m not so sure that Christian Bale’s cockney accent was that convincing, he seemed to be over doing it like a Charles Dickens adaptation. Still the effects were great, very slick and I took great delight in seeing that poxy cat get zapped! Mwahahaha! I hate feckin’ cats
There really isn’t anything I don’t like about this film, really nicely shot and scripted; the acting is pretty darn good and I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before! I knew nothing of this film but now I do and I like
64. Batman Begins - Seen it before
65. Pan's Labyrinth - Seen it before
66. Labyrinth - Seen it before
67. Monty Python's The Holy Grail - Seen it before
68. A Time to KillI'd never heard of this film despite the huge cast! Keifer Sutherland, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Samual L Jackson .etc .etc Really good. I'm not a fan of Matthew McConaughey due to his girly pretty boy style he usually puts into everything I've seen him in but he really came through in this one.
A very brutal film and makes you feel for part Samuel L Jackson plays. I was gripped throughout and I was left not wanting it to end... It's got to be said that I wasn't as blown away by the end speech he made to convince the jury as I hoped I would be but he did a good job nonetheless.
I'm still amazed I've never heard of it!
69. The Godfather I - Seen it before
70. The Godfather III didn't enjoy this film half as much as I hoped I was going to, I remember watching the first Godfather years ago and thought it was good, but this one didn't engage me at all. I had to watch it in several parts as I kept getting bored and wanting to do other things. The constant changing between english and Italian didn't appeal to me and there were slightly too many characters anmes to remember. He was working for him but double crossing him through him and getting beat up by him but at the same time working for this other guy Agghh!. Too confusing for me.
71. The Green Mile - Seen it before
72. A Clockwork Orange - Seen it before
73. Brotherhood (Korean)Wow, very, very good film. I'm getting into this subtitled war film thing! At first subtitles always puts me off a bit but you really don't notice them after a while.
This was a really emotional film and you could feel the struggles the two brothers went through during their time in the war. This is the first film I've seen that is made from the point of view from the oriental armies. It does make you think. You see the Apocalypse Nows and the Full Metal Jackets and just see anyone that isn't western as the bad guys but it’s just not true.
The gore in this film was just right, i.e. shit loads of it! I do love a bit o'gore! We had heads exploding in full view, hands being blasted off whilst still firing the machine guns, limbs blown clean off, heads being held in fire by someone's foot. It had it all!
74. Finding Nemo - Seen it before
75. Das Boot (The Boat)Oh. My. God. What a fantastic film! This has immediately become one of my all time favourite films (probably in my top 3). Despite being in German and subtitled this was a stunningly made masterpiece of cinematography. The tension, the pain, the fear, the hope, all were portrayed incredibly well. I was completely engrossed in this film and the 3h 25m running time was just not enough! I want more! I found myself swapping alliances to the Germans whilst watching this and hoping they were going to rise up from the bottom and get to their destination.
The fact that it was based on real events that the real U-96 went through makes the film even more poignant.
The ending was incredibly tragic but victorious at the same time.... Those bloody pesky Brits and their annoying flying thingamabobs!!!
Doesn't the guy taking pictures for the journal look like that young guy (Jake?) from formula one who interviews Eddy Jordan and David Coultard
Thanks to who ever suggested this one for the list, in my opinion it's the most worthy of a place on my shelf of any films on this list so far.
76. Spaceballs - Seen it before
77. Young FrankensteinHaha! Great film! Really funny
I do like Gene Wilder, he's an actor that I tend to forget about until I see him in a film I wasn't expecting to see him in then find it to be really good. He always gives a great performance and this film is no exception. Marty Feldman was a great sidekick and *looks on Google* ....oh my god his eyes are actually like that?!?! Blimey! There was a guy who did a 3D portrait of him (I didn't know it was of him until I saw this film) and it's of virtually photographic quality, here's the link:
www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=045504Oh the Frankenstein monster is from the film too! Didn’t know that haha.
I thought Mel Brooks would have had a bigger part in the film but it didn't detract from the genius writing. I think my favourite scene was when the Monster went into that blind guy’s house and was fed some soup, wine and a cigar! hahaha, hilarious scene.
Really pleased I watched this one, this is the type of film I started this list for and is one of the treasures I found so far. Thanks to whoever suggested it
78. K-19 The WidowmakerYet another submarine film! cant believe it! That's 4!
They didnt really have a chance on that sardine can did they! bloody 'ell!
I have no idea what the casting director was thinking when they cast Ford and Neeson thinking "yeah sure, they can do a Russian accent!" ... No! ...they cant! bad move there on thier part I think. Surely there must be a good couple of russian actors that could have done a good job? Anyway after first half hour I tried to block it out of my mind.
The movie itself was very good, as are pretty much all the other 2 sub movies in this list. I guess I like submarine movies as a genre. The makeup for the radiation victims was amazing and quite scary to think that just 10mins in that chamber would do that.
Also, the makeup making Ford and Neeson look old at the end was probably the best 'old' makeup ive ever seen.. Looked brilliant and really believable.
I didn't really get why Ford character was praised at the end after being a total twat throughout the movie. He endangered the lives of the crew on many occasions, cutting off their long range communications in the process of surfacing through the meter thick ice. Completely ignored a single piece of advice from anyone including the other captain on board. Ran training drills that were far more dangerous than needed to be run. Submerged the boat to well below the crush depth.
But yeah, he's our captain, there's only one. No! Neeson's one too! He's a dick! shoot him!
Good film
79. Hunt for Red OctoberAlthough I believe I have seen this one before I couldn't remember a single thing about it so I decided to give it another bash. And though it was a good film, well made, well written/adapted .etc I didn't get anywhere near the liking for it that I did with the amazing Das Boot. No matter how much I tried I couldn't get over the fact that a Russian Sub Captain, born in Lithuania had a Scottish accent, I'm quite sure that wasn't explained when his bio was being reeled off by Alec Baldwin. But I digress; I enjoyed the story a lot but wasn't drawn in enough to call this a favourite.
The chase down the underwater channel between the Red October and the homing torpedo was quite exiting and good old James Bond being a rebel and ignoring the advice of his peers and doing his own thing was well done.
I thought the cheesy scene at the end where Connery and Baldwin talking out of the top of the sub was too CG to make me believe it, the background didn't work for me, looked far too much like they were in a green-screen studio.
All in all, not bad but not that special compared to at least one other submarine movie.
80. Memphis Belle - Seen it before
81. Crimson TideA third submarine film in this one list!
Just like Hunt for the Red October I think I have seen at least part of this film before but could remember nothing about it.. I think I was just too young before to understand or care about this type of films before, but now I appreciate them a lot more.
This slots into a very worthy second place out of the three sub films here (Das Boot still head and shoulders over the other two). There was a lot of tension in this film. A very, very simple plot line, basically 'who fires first?' is pretty much all you need to know. But that doesn't detract from the film at all; a complex plot clearly is not always needed.
Both Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman put on a sterling performance and very believable to boot.
The part where the pipe flange came off into that engineer's face was amazingly well done I think, made me wince when it happened. I do love a bit of blood in a film
The result of the incomplete message was as easy to see coming as an Eastenders plot line but again I don’t think it really needed to be that unknown to make it a good film.
I didn't expect the result of the court hearing at the end, that was a nice touch and showed a very different side to the hard man-Captain Ramsey.
82. The Great DictatorI'm ashamed to say that before this I had never seen a Charlie Chaplin film. One of the most famous actors of all time and I've never seen any of his works in full, only little sketches here and there..
Well, now I have and I really enjoyed it. He really has something about him that suits him to that kind of humour so well, he certainly knows who to fall over
I loved the scene where they were given puddings and one had a coin in, or rather ALL of them had coin in but they didn't know, great scene.
The mix up at the end was bound to happen and I’m glad it did. His speech was pretty powerful and really unexpected about not fighting a war .etc .etc
His German gobbledegook was really funny, you could tell that it was made up but it still sounded like the German language!
very clever
On to the next film I guess!
83. The GeneralHah, that was pretty good actually!
What a wide range of films there are on this list! I think that’s the first proper silent film I’ve watched, speech quote cards and everything!
I was really, really expecting the girl to get tied to the tracks at some point as after seeing her for the first time I though she was that girl that gets tied up. Never mind really good film that. I like the fact that there was no need for speech cards (or whatever they are called) for everything everyone was saying, just the parts of the speech that couldn’t be acted, and they were few and far between due to the great skills of the actors/actresses. I loved the part where he sat on the joining bar of the train wheels as it started moving sending him up and down, great fun
The train chase was fantastic! Loads of skill went into that chase. In particular when he found a sleeper on the tracks wedged between two others then he threw a second sleeper down to catapult it out of the way, amazing accuracy considering he was on a moving train at the time.
The stunts were brilliant too, particularly the point were he was once again clearing the tracks and got hit from behind by the moving train causing him to fall backwards onto the cow-catcher, great visually and bloody dangerous! That train wouldn’t be stopping for anyone! He then carried on by dragging his feet along the sleepers in front of the moving train risking getting them caught under the train. You can imagine they’d never allow that these days, it’d all have to be shitty green screened CGI......
One thing I can’t make out is whether they actually dropped a how-ever-many ton train off that burning bridge? Surely that would be way to expensive, especially for that era (1927) those things cost a bomb! But then it didn’t look like a model, and did they do models back then? I don’t think so. It’s got e stumped anyway J
Anyway I didn’t think I’d ever like it as much as that after pressing play and realising it was a silent film; not previously knowing a single thing about it, but I did!
84. Modern TimesHaha, that was actually pretty funny! even if it was filmed in 1936. There were quite a few notable scene which made me giggle; the automated food machine in the factory, young chaplin did a great performance on that; The part where his prison food got put on his plate while he wasnt looking and he turned to look at it and then looked up to see if it was the result of a bird flying over
and the roller skating in the department store close to the edge. That was amazingly well excecuted.
I wasnt expecting to enjoy this that much but I really did. You can see why he got so famous with performances like this. Good on him
85. A Night to Remember Ohhhh, it's about the Titaniiiiic! Never heard of this one before (the film not the ship
) By about half way through I could see the end coming from a mile off! yes I know Im good
Really interesting to see how someone else did the film next to the modern version. Nice to see a non-gory film that didnt revolve around a soppy love story too! it was through the eyes of the crew rather than the passengers
86. The Wrestler Once again an annoyingly open-ended ...ending. Did he die? I want to know.
The film was better than I expected and I still dont know why such a lot of people follow it fanatically when its just a scripted pantomime. I mean yeah it looks real when you're five years old but adults are crazy over it! what gives? But I digress, The film reminded me largely of the recent Rocky film where the aging boxer just has to have that last fight as "thats all he knows" .etc .etc.
I enjoyed the frequent trips to the strip bar
...the ones in the film weren't bad either! badum-pshhhh!
I did actually find myself hoping that he wouldnt go through with the last match so it must have had a bit of an effect on me.
Not my favourite film out of the bunch but still a good'n
87. No Country For Old Men - Seen it before
88. Sideways Well I really quite enjoyed that. Cant believe im saying this but like a fine wine it got better with time. *ducks* I know, shoot me. This film was full of subtle humour which I have always thought of as cleverer than righting full-on gags. I loved the golf scene where they got a ball hit towards them, great scene. Also when Miles was getting depressed in the vineyard tasting area then drunk out of the spitoon! gross but hilarious! The funniest scene of all for me was the one where Jack wanted to crash the car to give him an alibi for his broken nose, then they put a brick on the pedal and it proceeds to completely miss the tree and goges down a ditch. So funny. Oh and when Miles walked in on Jack and Stephanie having sex almost made me spit my drink out over the screen, hilarious.
Along side the humour in this film was a hell of a lot of excruciating awkward and very sad moments. His relationship with Maya being one of those cases, but I could relate to some of the way he felt about himself through my own youth and his failed kiss attempt in the kitchen really made me feel for him. When he found out about his ex's pregnancy near the end I really thought he was going to top himself and give the film as sad an ending as you can get but hope springs and left me a little undure if I'm honest. but saying more would spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it, so I won't
Thanks to whoever added that one, really good film.
(by the way doesn't Jack look like Willem Dafoe
Next up: The General with Buster Keaton.
89. Taken Wow that was fantastic! MUCH better than I had ever hoped for. It's a merge between The Bourne Identity and Ransom and that’s going straight on my DVD wanted list
I never thought of Liam Neeson as a hard-man and the trailer of this film turned me off it to be honest, after him saying all that 'I will hunt you down, and I will kill you' stuff, I'd think 'yeah right, who are you' but he really did a great job!
Amazing fight sequences that really give the Bourne films a serious run for their money. He really doesn't give a toss who he beats up or kills, if you're in his way then your neck is broken or you have a bullet making a nest in your brain. Brilliant!
Can’t really say a bad word about this film, full-on action, though I did think he could have bargained to see his daughter more often after all he went through, he just gave her back to her mum and partner then went on his way!
Anyway, very, very good film.
90. Crash Hmm... , I had to watch it twice to understand the ending as I thought I must have fallen asleep a bit towards the end the first time. I like films that have lots of different stories and tie them together but this film didn't really do that at all. I was really expecting a cjoining of all the stories towards the end that explained the crash, but it never happended. Why would they name a film containing multiple storylines after just one of them? I didn't expect the whole film to be centered around racism, I expected more of lovey dovey story line. I thought Sandra Bullocks acting was the best, one or two of the others (particularly the Hisband who let the officer grope his wie gave the weakest performance.) I really like the way it was filmed and it reminded me very much of Collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.
So yeah I liekd it but wished the ending was better.
91. Sexy BeastHah! loved the ending lol! great expression. Ben Kingsley is one of those actors where I often find myself saying he's one of my favourites but then remember that ive only ever seen about two of his films. I do like british films like this, they seem to come accross as a lot more genuine than most of the tripe that hollywood spews out every five minutes. I remember taping this years back and never getting to watch it so Im glad I have now. Ray Winstone was really good in this film and wasn't his wife that the woman off that Dennis Waterman crime drama recently? Anyway, the dialogue Kingsley was given was great and I enjoyed how he delivered it, very precise and to the point with a hint of odd humour about it. It still shocks me to hear the C word in films even though it's virtually as common as any other word these days.
I was quite surprised to find that the actually robbery was covered very little in this film seeing that's what the whole problem was all about. It was all about Winstone's struggle and refusal to do it but giving in in the end.
I'm not sure I really got the whole Donnie Darko bunny thing, that flew over my head on this one.
But yeah, like I said good film. I shall recommend..
Dracula next!
92. The Last King of ScotlandWow that film was pretty much everything I was hoping for and more!... I have wanted to see this film for ages as I really like Forest Whitaker and after seeing him in Vantage Point it really goes to show what a great actor he is.
A very brutal and graphic film, especially towards the end. I wasn't expecting the shots of one of the President's wives body after being found pregnant, blimey that was gruesome!
The hanging scene wasn't as shocking as it might have been to most people because I actually know of someone how does that hanging from their-own skin as some kind of odd pastime and he posts pictures on my 3D forum (with a big disclaimer
so I'd kinda seen that before in real life (well, photos). But the fact people did it for real to torture others did put a new an realistic and frightening spin on it.
I loved the whole film, and couldn't help thinking how closely James McAvoy looked like Ewan McGregor. He did a great job throughout and have just found out on imdb that he was Mr. Tumnus in the Narnia film! oh yeah!
The only thing I found a bit odd was the fact that the Presidents guards didn't shoot him dead right at the start when he stole the President's gun to shoot the cow! surely that is a national security risk no? and he didn't really seem angry enough to nick the gun in the first place. But other than that, bloody marvellous film and a sure addition to my DVD wanted list. I'm totting up quite a few after this list!
Thanks to whoever suggested this one.
93. UnforgivenWow that was pretty darn great. Im not usually a big fan of cowboy films but I really enjoyed this one. Particularly the last 20mins or so. I'm not really sure how he managed to stand in the middle of the bar at the end and shoot everyone without getting himself shot in the process, but thats film for you
I wasn't aware it was directed by Clint Eastwood until the credits came up at the end. Maybe that's why I liked it so much as Im a big fan of his directing, Gran Torino and Million Dollar Baby are up there in my favourite films.
His dont-give-a-crap attittude that he gives his characters is very entertaining to me. Im not sure I'll be buying this as I dont really see myself watching it again but I did enjoy it a lot.
94. Millers Crossing Well, I really didn't understand ANYTHING about that film, it completely lost me from the start, I restarted it probably 3-4 times to try and understand it and each time I just didn't get it. Can't really review a film I didn't understand so I guess this is the end of this one!
95. Logan's RunWell the overriding thing that I got out of that film is that they seemed to take any opportunity at all to get their kit off! even if it wasn't particularly needed!
Great story though the acting was very very wooden. I can see that having a remake, it's in need of one I feel anyway, though judging by todays standards they'd just stuff in way too much CGI pornage and lose the storyline so maybe its better left alone.
I loved the old man character, he was great. The robot gaurding the exit from the city ('box' was it?) was the least frignhtening gaurdian ever made I think.
"I'm going to travel very slowly and hope you get in my line of sight as I cant really move my arms to aim at you so can you stand still while I turn around and.... oh you've gone."
Some funky hair styles there too haha. I wonder how long it will be before they come back into fashion
96. Tron - Seen it before
97. Time Bandits Never heard of this one, though I did recognise the part where the ship gets lifted out of the water by that giant. Twas a fun film so it was, quite enjoyed it actually.
Nice to see Kenny Baker in there. It makes you realise he's small even for a midget! perfect size for R2-D2
There were several midgets in that film that have cropped up in various other films but I was surprised that Warwick Davis wasn't there (Wicket), he's usually in most things involving midgets but clearly not this one.
After watching it, I seemed to realise there wasn’t really much plot. The guys stole the map from the Almighty being or whatever his name was, ran around a bit and gave it back at the end of the film. Pesky little guys! lol
I would have liked to have seen this film when I was a kid but seeing as I recognised the giant scene, I may well have done and forgotten the rest
Nice addition to the list.
98. A Hard Day's NightI'm not to sure what to make of this 'film', particularly because I don't really see how it can be called a 'film' as such. It had no real plot or theme other than people waiting for them to arrive at the gigs. It came across to me more like a collection of sketches than a film. As I said in the yellow submarine review, I'm not a great fan of The Beatles anyway and this didn't really do anything for making me like them any more. I finished watching it with a "meh" sort of feeling and don't think I'll ever want to have a second viewing.
What I did notice was Ringo's complete inability to play the drums in the way the song he was miming was doing it... Whether that inability be in the form of being totally out of time or playing the drums in the wrong way i.e..... using the rim of the snare where in the recording he is clearly using the skin. But hey he was famous for being rubbish at drums
Unless of course this was the editor’s fault for choosing parts of the audio that didn't match the video, in which case I let you off Ringo, you hear that? you can sleep easy tonight, I've let you off.
I did enjoy Albert Steptoe's contribution in this film, especially when he was forging signed Beatles photos and selling them wearing a sandwich board
) I noticed he was very clean though!
This is all.
99. South Park The Movie, Bigger Louder Uncut - Seen it before
100. Brazil (Terry Gilliam)Ok .....that was just bizarre. Where on earth that storyline came from I have no idea. I can't really say if I like it or not because I'm still in a kind of 'eh?' state of mind
However, that said, I thought the part played by Robert De Niro was bloody brilliant
really funny especially his first scene in the film. I kinda lost the plot (I mean both the storyline and my mental stability) when watching this and was just looking at the pictures as it kinda melted my mind but it was certainly imaginative!
It of course didn't help that I didn't even realise that the guy flying about with wings was the same guy playing the lead role until the end! I just thought it was some random oddness stuck in the film for no reason!
This film also holds one of my all time favourite quotes coming from Jill Layton played by Kim Greist when she was sat on the bed and it had just been explained to her that she was officially dead, she comes out with "Care for a little Necrophilia" hahaha! classic line!
101 Withnail and II know, I know, there was only meant to be 100, but I meant to add this before but seemingly forgot, watched before realising it wasn't on the list and thought I'd add my 'review' anyway.
This film reminded quite vividly of the British comedy 'Bottom' with Rick Mayall and Ade Edmondson. I'm not sure if I liked it or not really, I'm quite undecided. With that said it did have it's moments, like Richard E Grant's character in the car and saying 'I feel like a pig shat in my head!' hahaha, great line. I did go through most of the film not knowing if they had remembered to in.
Since watching these films I have gone out and bought:
Das Boot
Apocalypse Now
Lost in Translation
Dog Day Afternoon
Taken
Taxi Driver
...so the film industry has benefited
