Wow, quite a post there! And well done on achieving what must have seemed a bloody daunting task at the start! Glad you loved the likes of Lost in Translation and Sideways - they're both probably in my top ten. Great list and well done, squire!

Interesting stuff! I think Mr Grotey should get some sleep now and desist from popcorn until his bowels recover while we make an award that looks like an Oscar in an armchair. I think there are some films missing from the list! Plus, I think the age of the reviewer has a big impact on what films appeal. Its really easy to criticise older films from todays perspective and miss something wonderful. Eg, "the aliens in close encounters are a bit generic"- by todays standards yes, but back then they weren't. There were only a tiny number of movies (like Communion- remember that?) who chose to portray aliens "correctly" ie without three heads, tentacles and a blaster ray. So, the films had to be seen at the time to fully appreciate them. Some early films deserve more credit too. Modern movies frequently suffer from bad or non existent plotlines, im sure you'll agree, and then lashings of special effects to fill the huge gaps. Some old films have amazing stories but poorer SFX. Im amazed that Monster from the ID (Forbidden Planet) isn't here, and Clash of the titans (original), or the original King Kong or Silent Running. I heard a teenager say recently, when Maltese Falcon was mentioned- " Why would I watch an old black and white film?...they're all crap!". Maybe Im just getting old, but sometimes Id much rather watch a classic than a modern mess...Am I alone here PS If you want more Das Boot Mr G, get hold of the TV series on DVD. The movie was a cut down version of that. Truly excellent stuff. Regards!

62 Dark Star. I love this film, saw it as a kid. Yes I know the special effects are naff, the Alien is only a beach-ball with feet, but what expressive feet they are And the argument they have with the bomb in the bomb-bay and the Captain is a giant popsicle. Hippies in space!! I loved it. ;D

Dark Star was actually created while John Carpenter was still at university on a shoe string budget. Quite amazing really! Quality. Forbidden Planet and Silent Running are ace too.

Silent Running, another of my all time favourites. The three maintenance robots, Huey, Dewey, and Louie cheating at cards and incompetently trying to plant a tree.

Glad you liked Das Boot mrgrotey, it's one of my all-time favourites too. Also, all four of the sub films were suggested my myself. What can I say except that I really like submarines?
Also in The General, that was a real train falling off that bridge.

a couple of really girly submissions...... Amelie and À la folie... pas du tout (He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not)......and just because I think Samuel Le Bihan is kinda sexy, Le pacte des loups Brotherhood of the Wolf (NOT the dubbed version - Maryanne just sounds whiny) Girls - one word Mani. Boys, Monica Belluci plays a prostitute. Yeah, I know you want to see it now.
And I didn't see Nosferatu or Metropolis on the list. my bad? or not a big fan?
And Mr Grotey, thats pretty much what happened n the book Dracula. He can turn into a dog, and he doesn't die (or sparkle) in sunlight. They have a big build up and them pfft. Van H lifts the lid on the coffin and kills him.
oooooh before I forget....Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman...(geek chick purrrrrrrrrrr)

Well, if you ever get the opportunity I can certainly recommend it - Tom Stoppard plays are usually great to see as a live production.
