Hello all! Great to find an active wotw forum, im a fan of wotw, particularly jeff wayne's work.
(As an aside, why wont this thing let me sign up with capital letters in my name? I want to be Procyon )
Anyway, wanted to talk about the quite excellent PC game a bit. In particular, I noticed a few people seemed to think it was really hard.. im not sure why, ive always found it too easy (after my first couple of games anyway )
For anyone else thinking the same, it turns out theres all these nice registry keys the game adds to the registry, that you can edit to change aspects of the game, e.g. increase the difficulty. This page has info about much of it:
home.swipnet.se/~w-96979/games/wowreg.htm
Last game i played was earlier this year, cant remember exactly what i did to the registry unfortunately, but i got pretty well slaughtered by the martians Also unfortunately I think they assembled such a massive army before assaulting London, and i had covered it in so many guns, that the final battle wouldnt load and the game just crashed, haha
Also, theres some complaints about it not running on XP.. I have XP and it runs, apart from the occasional crash, so im not sure what the problem is? However, i havnt manged to get the music to work, and i gather that the way the game tries to access the cd directly to play it simply isnt allowed in xp, pity. One can use windows media player while playing, but its just not the same!
And a final observation - i discovered, when first looking at these registry things, that the game actually has a multiplayer mode!! It is incomplete though, and apparently unplayable. Would make the game about 10x more awesome if you could play against other people wouldnt it??
My attempts to play with it resulted in the two computers connecting to eachother successfully, but then the game would crash on startup. I gather thats to do with synch issues between them, in the time acceleration thing and the specific locations of the martian pod landings.
Well, that was a bit of a ramble, but if anyone wants to discuss any of that crap i just said, or the game in general, please do
