OK ive seen Max Payne.
My opinion of this film is favourable. For those not in the know Max Payne is a movie adaptation of the computer game of the same name.
What struck me was this film is the first game/movie crossover where the plot is pretty faithful to the game unlike say Resident Evil. The other big point was that this game actually didnt have much action in it. It all built up to the big shootout at the end. Max actually did what most Detectives do: detect and follow the path to its end.
Story goes like this: Max's wife and baby are murdered by junkies. Several years later Max is working the Cold Case files hoping for a lead to the murders. He finds one and off he goes, pissing off corporate thugs, criminals and his own Police force as he goes. All building up to the ending where Max finally has his revenge.
Ive noticed people seem to fall into several camps watching this film: Game fans who hate the film, game fans that like the film (like me) and those who dont know of Max Payne in any form.
I liked the fact it was a 13 rated movie, the game is an 18 rate due to the horror elements, blood and guts and swearing. The film all those elements are gone. Yes there are violent acts but its left to the imaginations of the audience and it works.
Plus points: fantastic effects when you see drug induced visions in the eyes of the junkies. Brilliant set pieces. surprisingly interesting plot although not complicated. Tried to be faithful to the source material without trying to cram everything in. Good pace to the story, nothing wasted.
Negative points: I recognised the baddie within 5 mins of seeing him. Editing is a little haphazard. Ending a little abrupt acting average.
Rusti Rate: 7/10 as long as you don't expect too much you'll enjoy it.
