I have to agree that the book is quite heavy reading for a 13 year old, its not written to appeal to that generation, particularly the currently generation of illiterate, arrogant, disrespectful, monitor/tv-bound teenagers we seem to be spawning nowadays. I can understand where he's coming from, I don't agree, but I understand. When I first read the book I was twelve years old. I sought it out because I had seen the 1953 film and because my mom introduced me to the musical by Jeff Wayne shortly after that. So I picked a Dutch translation up from the local library. It was the first time that I was really interested by a novel. Within a week I finished it and I read it again the same year. When I was thirteen I picked up the original English version from another library. And after Spielberg's film came out I bought a copy in English (the one with Edward Gorey's illustrations). So I don't consider it to be heavy reading.
