Christmas shopping on the internet recently. Out of curiousity stumbled across this review on Amazon.co.uk for the novel. Cannot link to it but I quote the following from "Andrew111291" dated 9/7/2005" "Very Very Boring" I am 13 and was told to read this for an English lesson. The book promises to be good; an alien invasion , giant laser heat-ray machines, the close of the human race.... But , it sucked quite simply. We were told to read it all in the holidays and my class found it so boring nobody could be bothered to finish it. Also the way Wells writes about the action is plain and pedantic. It was obviously a breakthrough in the 1890s but somehow doesnt work with the modern lifestyle. However the film is breathtaking. To any kids considering buying it, steer clear" 5 out of 90 people found this review helpful. Wonder which production he found breathtaking. Now the question here is .... has he reached 14 with that attitude?

That'll be the Spielberg one, I spose. Perhaps we shouldn't be too harsh on people who saw that before they read the book. It would be a bit of a culture shock, I imagine. On second thoughts... kill the heathen disbelievers!

Here's the link: tinyurl.com/62jbo9 (4 reviews from the bottom) I have to agree that the book is quite heavy reading for a 13 year old, its not written to appeal to that generation, particularly the currently generation of illiterate, arrogant, disrespectful, monitor/tv-bound teenagers we seem to be spawning nowadays. I can understand where he's coming from, I don't agree, but I understand. Anyway, what bloody 13 yr old uses words like pedantic?!!

No doubt, that kid was one of my fellow Americans. I actually saw the SS movie before I read the book, and I was 13 when I read it. It wasn't heavy reading for me at all, it only took 3 days- proof that I, an American teenager, preferred the book over any film Hollywood could produce. And I'd asy that kid was lucky: I was never forced to read the good book for an assignment. I have had to read books like Pride and Prejudice, Life of Pi, The Good Earth, etc., etc. But I've always been a leather boot in a salad bowl when it comes to reading. In other words: I like things that modern American teenagers hate, and I don't do junk that is expected from modern American teenagers.
So we can thank the SS film for one thing: it gave me an interest (more like a temporary obsession from which I am recovering but does not mean I won't have the interest anymore) that brought me to the book, and that book brought me to this forum.

Mmm, the 13 year old clearly has no imagination and insists on talking out of his smimp valve.

Admit that the source material is heavy for a 13 year old however if said teacher perhaps had taken the time to properly introduce the themes within the novel as well as being an incredible story of alien invasion then the class could have been more inspired. From experience I did have lazy teachers myself who would chuck a novel at you and expect a 500 word essay in return ( in my case Sons & Lovers ). Only giving him the benfit of the doubt.
My own introduction to the original material was, as many of you gentlemen, courtesy of Jeff Wayne. I would have been 14 at the time and up till then associated HG Wells masterpiece with the George Pal 1953 film. My fist HG Wells novel was borrowed from the school library tht same year and was "First Men In The Moon" and I quickly became absorbed in this imaginative , incredible story which made me seek out more material ( on reflection it was harder in the late 70s to obtain more of HG Wells work ).
That was my introduction to the mans incredible works. Fortunately I do have a vivid imagination.
So if that is the case he is entitled to his opinion but to come on that particular forum and make such a statement? A saying comes to mind from years past " If you feel what your about to say will make you look stupid then do not say it and perhaps prove you are"
So I am sharpening the pitchfork as we speak and lighting the torch ..... burn the heretic !!!!

It's got a maximum range of 6,800 metres. Forget 'effective' range - I'll still get the punk.
