Crystal egg?! Where was that mentioned?

Hey chaps and ladies,

Well ive been reading Nerfy's aftermath sequal (wow its great! and I came to a part where 'Smith' was shown a palantir-style crystal egg with an ability for seeing events on mars. Now, not remembering this egg from the original novel I presumed it was invented via artistic licence by Nerfy, but now reading the latest Invasion-of-the-Earth comic update on eveofthewar forums he has brought this crystal egg into his story too.

Did I miss something here? Ive never heard of this egg thing before and now two different people have brought up the same object into their adaptions.

I thought id look it up on one of the free online ebooks you can get but nowhere does it seem to mention either crystal or eggs.

What am I missing folks?! please enlighten me

The Crystal Egg was a short story also written by Wells in which a man 'acquires' said artefact and sees within it creatures on some other world in it that seem to be Martians.
As such, some see the story as a sort of prequel to TWoTW.
