I've heard a few times now that there was a version of WOTW produced in the very early days of silent cinema. HG Wells himself may have been involved in its production. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this? Just to be even more unhelpful, no I don't remember where I got this info from, but it was a good few years ago, hence the apparently incongruous title of this thread!

Apparently there was a sadly long lost version of Wells First Men in the Moon filmed in the UK in the "Silent" era of cinema so it's possible, can't say i,ve heard or read of a WOTW's movie though.

I can't find any reference to a silent-era WOTW film, even at this list of SF books-into-film: fifdb.com/sf.htmlBut I did find this: H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds had been on Paramount Pictures' docket since the silent era, when it was optioned as a potential Cecil B. DeMille production. When Paramount finally got around to a filming the Wells novel, the property was firmly in the hands of special-effects maestro George Pal.movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=53372As you probably know, H.G. Wells was involved in the production of "Things to Come".

Just to annoy ya, I saw some stills from an abandoned British version about twelve years ago at a sci- fi exhibit in Warrington museum. And I've never found a trace of that on the web, either.... I did smoke a lot of dope in my uni days, which may account for lots of this!
