Has anyone read that collection of short stories called "War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches"? It's a good book in my view, and I don't blame anyone if they haven't read, or even heard of, it. It's about "accounts" of the invasion from very famous people from around the same time period as the original novel was written by HG Wells. In a chapter with an "account" from Mark Twain (note that these "accounts"are written by different people), you read about how some people managed to bring down a Fighting Machine in New Orleans. How did they do it you ask? By luring the Fighting Machine into a deep pit with a GREEN MAN ON A GREEN HORSE! This idea was stolen from the book "The Pool of Fire" written by John Christopher in "The Tripods Trilogy!"

Yeah. 'Global Dispatches' is ok. Some stories are better than others. it has to be said. Also, I have my own thoughts about parts of it that I won't go in to. Otherwise, it's a fairly nice compendium. With reference to TWoTW stories, perhaps my favourite book (aside from my own sequel, obviously !) is 'The Space Machine' by Christopher Priest.

Basically (in order not to give too much away) a Victorian chap accidentally finds himself transported to Mars in a Time Machine (which can travel across space as well as time, hence the title) and finds himself in the middle of their preparations for the invasion. Somehow he has to get back to Earth and so on. Goes into some detail about Martian society and the like. Runs sort of parallel with the original novel. Is good.

Does it have lots of Tripod action?

Well. There are tripods in it. Part of it is set during the War, after all.

I just read the story again. In the story they said mthey got the pitfall idea from an Englishman named Christopher. So I gues it wasn't plagiarism after all.

Does it have lots of Tripod action? There is a very good scene in 'The Space Machine' with a lot of Tripod against Tripod action in it, whilst our traveler is stuck on Mars. It is a good read, I've read it twice.
