I hope the Martian has been rejigged for the new stage show. The one on my DVD looks like a dreadlocked Eagle fellow from The Muppets

Nerfy and I attended the Newcastle Metro Arena showing of the New Generation. We got to meet Jeff Wayne, Damian, Will Stapleton etc. It was a fantastic show and great to meet Jeff and everyone afterwards over a drink. There were many highlights, but I think the biggest was actually Ricky Wilson's Artilleryman. The Kaiser Chief's frontman was utterly spellbinding as the unhinged soldier. I thoroughly recommend the show and the new album.

That sounds so good Rich, did you find it better than the original run of the show from several years ago? I saw it when it came to Australia in 2007 (gee - that was a while ago wasn't it!) and I was blown away by it.

Tough one! There were parts of the CGI, effects and stage that had been refined since those early shows, but whether you will prefer this new generation show or the original will come down to your love of the music in the end. I still adhore the original music, but I have to say this new version was awesome too and I loved the additional development of the narrator's character and story as a whole. Final verdict - both old format and new are excellent. Some may prefer one or the other, but I think everyone will agree that they are both excellent.

I have been listening to New Gen pretty regularly since its release, I initially had my sceptical ears on and wasn't fully enveloped by what I heard. But since, I've not only grown to like it, but I love it. In fact, quite controversially, while I still hold the original with high esteem, I find myself preferring New Gen.
I thought Liams voice as the narrator was a little too soft in comparison to R Burt, but now Burtons voice just grates on me. I think Barlow slips into the role of the Narrators spoken thoughts brilliantly. The guitar solo at the end of Horsell Common and the Heat Ray makes love to my ears.
The dubstep elements within The Artillery Man and the Fighting Machine caught me off guard, but it was partly due to getting used to the changed flow of the music, now I think its well implemented and adds a new flavour to the piece.
Alex Claire as the voice of humanity I love, he's such a strong singer, so much power and emotion in his voice...... I prefer his Thunder Child to Chris Thompson's, my apologies to all the die hard fans of the original, but I just think Alex is a better singer.
Spirit of Man blew me away, I think Sabre is a competent singer, not at the level of Lynott, but still very good, but Joss Stone just powered through the song with one of the most awesome soulful performances I've heard in some time, she truly lifted Spirit of Man to a new level for me.
Ricky as the Artillery man was well spoken and sung, I very much enjoyed the renovated Brave New World.
All of the accompanying music I thought was well adjusted to a more modern step, without losing the essence of what made the original such a musical treasure trove of awesome.
I believe that probably for many people, especially the haters, the initially listen can be quite jarring and turn you away from it, if you know you're not going to like it before the first listen.... why are you listening to it, lol? But I think, once you turn the critic in your head off and stick the album on in the background, you'll suddenly realise that you have been listening to War of the Worlds, New Gen or not, its essentially the same piece of work & when you're not listening for the differences, its actually very much the same.
Well done Jeff!!!

Totally agree with you. I think for many the enjoyment will come after a two or three listens and then that enjoyment will grow and grow.
