I recently encountered a charming little page ( homepage.mac.com/cirquefilm/vfxhistory/AWARDS/HTML/1953.html) about aspects of Pal's WOTW, including this utterly fascinating (to me anyway) photo of, and caption concerning, the miniature of LA City Hall that is famously blown up by a Martian local authority planner: MGM propmakers pose with their LA City Hall model, made for the opening-day ceremonies and parade in 1928. After sitting in a warehouse for 23 years, Paramount purchased it so Pal could blow it up.Who woulda thunk it!

Trainee
Can I make a suggestion that doesn't involve violence, or is this the wrong crowd for that?

CGI is very cool and all, but I love the creativity and craftsmanship that went into things like this.

But can you imagine what it must feel like to spend days even weeks on a model only to have someone come along and blow the sh*t out of it? It would be even worse if the director then says "OK that was great, let's do it again, this time with film in the camera!" ;D

It would be even worse if the director then says "OK that was great, let's do it again, this time with film in the camera!" ;D Well, as someone who has spent weeks building a model to be blown up, I can say that it is actually an incredibly cathartic experience! ;D This is a (very far from perfect) miniature pyrotechnic effect I produced a few months ago: youtu.be/BYUx8eVUe24And this is the scene it was for: youtu.be/7gNoYJGCB70EDIT: Just to clarify (in response to Lonesome Crow's post below), only the first clip is my work, the second is that of a friend in Scotland who used my footage as a backdrop for his scene (the second clip), which is for a sci-fi action-adventure film he's making.

Cheers! Actually, I should make it clear that all I did was the mini-pyro shot itself (the first clip); I then sent that to a friend of mine in Scotland who is making a sci-fi action film and he used it as the backdrop for his scene (the second clip), in the process making it look much better than it was. Since filming that shot, I've been experimenting with various techniques for filming mini-pyro, such as this one: youtu.be/w4XkRdU-9iIYou never know, I may have a crack at a scene from WOTW one day...

That does look a lot better, the brickwork breaks up into tiny pieces rather than big chunks. Your not blowing up my Martian War machine. ;D
