These two films practically spawned their own mini genre for a while. Escape.. is one of my favourite films (not impressed with the sequel) and of all the Max movies then Max 2 i can watch over and over.
However, both lead to a host of Italian imitations - such as Bronx Warriors and 2019: After the Fall of New York (subtle uh?). I loved seeing these titles and loads more appearing on the video shelves and own stacks of them thanks to ebay and out of the way video shops.
Anyone else get into this mini genre of post apocalypse/warrior type movies?

Love Escape from New York (John Carpenter, so big thumbs up), but I agree the sequel was pretty damn poor. Also love the Mad Max films - there were dozens of poor imitations, none of which I can name right now.

"The Road Warrior" (the title of "Mad Max 2" here in the states) was a very nearly perfect film; being exactly the film it *wanted* to be, and achieving mythic quality to boot! Far better than any post-apocalyptic film has any right to be. And founding an entire sub-genre of films where apparently, until the hero shows up, the villains had nothing to do but sit around all day thinking up new punk-chic fashion statements. ;D Re "Escape from New York": Hey, practically *anything* with Kurt Russell in it is great in my book! And this movie was very fun, too. "Snake Plisskin? I thought you were dead!" .

There was a post apocalypse film I remember seeing as a kid- had a guy with a robotic arm that extended towards the camera as a 3D effect (part of that boom if I remember)- lots of cars/trucks again and desert. Came out around the same time as Spacehunter (see my other thread).
Wasn't very good, I'm sure, but I remember enjoying it as a kiddie.
And how about "A Boy and His Dog"? Early (first?) Don Johnson role (though late 70's I think or very start of 80's). A very good film full of scary victoriana. Different from your run of the mill post nuclear tale...

That'll be Metalstorm and while it's el cheapo it's also strangely watchable.
A Boy and His Dog I remember enjoying a long time ago.

Yeah, that was quite a strange film (A Bog and his Dog).
Another film on a similar(ish) theme was Hardware with Dylan McDermott and cameos from Iggy Pop and Lemmy. Quite an understated film - brooding and gritty. I remember liking it at the time, but it must be 15+ years since I saw it.

I can't say I actually enjoyed "A Boy and His Dog", it's rather too weird for this small-town boy from Kansas, but I'm glad I've seen it. It's certainly a refreshingly strange and different film!

Hardware is a GREAT film. Yep- radio presenter Iggy Pop and Lemmy driving a barge. Stunning soundtrack also- including PIL's The Order Of Death and Ministry's Stigmata. Also featuring Carl McCoy from Fields of the Nephilim. "Where's the little man?". Made by Richard Stanley- also did Nephilim music vids and directed another film Dust Devil which was OK, but not great. Really well shot though.
Sadly not on DVD in the U of K at the moment. I have a German Evaluation copy from Blackmirror. Love that film!

Is 2019 the one where there's few fertile people in the world and the blonde bint is being protected by the geez with the tash or rescued, or searched for (that's about 3 of the major plotlines for these films covered, then!)? IIRC, it was godawful!
edit- Incidentally, I've only ever seen the first 15 mins or so of Escape From New York- just up to when he gets dropped into the city.
Which is daft, really, considering how many of Carpenter's early films I like.
But there you go. That's me. Still not seen The Godfather. Still not seen Platoon. Or Goodfellas. It's good to be different!
another edit- Come to think of it, I've not seen Mad Max right through- only ever seem to have caught the end of that one. Seen 2 and 3 though. Seen MM 2 many a time. Great film, that is!
What was the film with the huge ship on wheels- in the desert I think. Lots of gun turrents- very Mad Max 2/3. May have even been at the start of Spacehunter (missed that bit the other night). Or I could have imagined it! ;D
