At the risk of being knocked on the noggin, I'm starting a new thread for the Doc Who thang, despite Rusti having started one a scant week ago.
(Kudos on the Life on Mars avatar Rusti, despite me disagreeing with you on this Doc Who subject)
I for one am heartily enjoying this new series so far. Once again perfect entertainment for the kids (which I persist in stating is justly the excellent target audience, shame Torchwood's rubbish for us adults though in my opinion) whilst having more than enough wit, intelligence and spookiness for adults.
I really like Freema as Martha too, in fact I think I even prefer her to Rose. In series 2 I thought it was a bit too much as if the Doc and Rose were part of an exclusive and slightly superior club that looked down on you. Like that pair who come along to parties to snark cruelly at others. I didn't like that, but the series 3 Martha/Doctor combo seems much more fun, intelligent and inclusive - so hurrah for that!
And this latest Shakespeare episode had more than enough in jokes for this ex-English literature student to knock back measures of whiskey to. I don't want my Doc Who as a monotone dark and broody (well, not often - Genesis of the Daleks is still the best one) adult series - I want fun and adventure.
Incidently Battlestar Galactica does indeed rock, so go watch that if you want the adult adventure stuff.
What did you others think of these two opening episodes? I reckon that if RTD can get over his plot hole problem and vary the concepts more then the new Doc Who could be one of the best adventure serials ever.
Just one thing - you don't need humanity in peril every week for us to care, Russell. You can make kids worried about the fate of individual characters, you know!
(PS: Sorry Rusti for stealing your thread starting thunder. I just thought that the old one got too off topic. Feel free to delete this one mods if you feel I'm replicating too much.)

I think you got the right idea. The first thread did wander off.

I am in agreement with everything you said. I just get a little fed up, as do others, that most of the episodes are based on or around Earth, when he can travel anywhere in the universe and beyond. Let's see some alien amazons with hairy hands and 5 bosoms!

I'm all for 5 bosoms, but I'll skip the hairy hands, thanks! Never fancied Germans

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5359552.stmMy guess why Doc Who is on Earth a lot these days isn't because they're lacking imagination (And anyway, I'm sure they want to go elsewhere - aka, other planets - themselves) but it's because of the cost. Doctor Who could always have a 'Pendragon Effect'. We get exactly what we want - the Doctor visits other planets and all that. BUT the quality of the series are affected - CGI is worse, etc. And then we complain more because of that and we've gained nothing cause we still think it's bad. The only real course of action would be for the BBC to increase funding - which I doubt would happen any time soon.

Well the official line given isn't the cost, its that RTD thinks that most of the audience wouldn't be able to maintain their interest in the programme if it wasn't rooted to Earth, with human characters. Which is a bit insulting of the intelligence of most people if you want my opinion! The main problem with sticking to Earth for all the stories (apart from the risk of boredom setting in ) is that the programme ceases to be about journeys in space and time to be only about journeys in time. And I don't think we're quite ready yet for a 'Quantum Leap' remake...! KR

Hmm, well I enjoyed that Mark Gattis one with Mr Lazarus and the monster and the laboratories and the screaming. A marked improvement on last weeks Dalek episode, which was frankly completely terrible.
Good sympathetic portrayal by Gattis of the villain too, who had a very understandable motivation. I also loved the sinister Mr Saxon hints. And how cool was that 'Next Time' second-half-of-series trailer? John Simms slumped there rapping his ring on the Cabinet table to the Doctor Who beat was astonishingly sinister. I really think that the finale of this series is going to be something special.
Also, no "In't humans brilliant!?" speech from Tennant this week, which means I add another point.

I thought they were pretty good compared to some of the episodes we've had.

I see Catherine Tate is reprising her role as Donna in the 4th series to be the Doc's new companion...

For once I agree with Rusti on Doc Who. Oh God.
I was really hoping it'd be Sally Sparrow from the excellent Blink episode. A shame really, it's been a pretty dang good season all told, bar a few duffers (the Dalek two parter, 42) and the Human Nature/Family of Blood two parter and Blink were utterly immense. John Simms as the Master was fun too.
Well, I'm not getting excited about series 4 now, as I pretty much loathe Tate.
Ho-hum.

Most TV now is... what's the phrase that is used here of late? Bobbins! Probably the last TV (seriously) I watched was the depature of Rose Tyler in Dr Who, whom I always liked. Since then, but not because of that, my love affair with TV in general has ended. Big style. All hail the mighty DVD. I can watch what I want and it doesn't involve nonentities being dickheads for other's amusement. I really don't get off on that stuff. Wake me up when TV gets some integrity and quality back and I may just look in.
