Finally got to watch this film and have to say I wasn't disappointed.
Set in fascist Spain in 1944, a young girl is taken to a new home by her mother to meet her new stepfather, a ruthless and sadistic officer in the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.
This is a fantastic mix of a gritty (and at times very gruesome with scenes of torture and murder) wartime drama and spellbinding fantasy (both dazzling and also very dark). Direction, effects, story and acting are all flawless. Ivana Baquero as young Ofelia is amazing and Sergi López as the evil stepfather is as good as Hopkins playing Lecter in my opinion.
it won 3 oscars and very deservedly so.

I'm surprised no one has responded to this thread before now. I'm with you. This movie was brilliant.Guillermo Del toro is a frakkin' genius. This film was perfectly cast, perfectly shot and edited, perfectly filmed...there's absolutely nothing bad I can say about it. not a thing.
I have the Platnum edition on dvd. Amazing extras. Worth the price.
