Sci-Fi channel appear to have produced a new version of Flash Gordon. Being a bit of a fan of ol' Flash (I remember watching the original serials on bbc2 in the late 70's early 80's and still have a soft spot for the 1980 film) I managed to find the pilot episode on line. I was terribly disappointed. The Sci-fi channel do not seem to have put a lot of effort into this one. They certainly haven't put much money into it. It looks cheap, it looks shabby, it looks like something that MST3K should be taking the p*ss out of. Ming (he's dropped 'the merciless' in this one) has been reduced to nothing more than a scheming manager. There are no spacecraft. Travel to Mongo is via a handy portal that seems to intermittantly open up between there and Earth. Flash's real name is Stephen . He's a jogger. Dale is his ex-girlfriend. The theme music is utterly unmemorable. Why did they even bother to write something new? There's only one theme suitable for Flash Gordon, and that's the one by Queen ;D. No 'Flash AAAHHH' no comment . Nothing much seems to happen in the episode. It doesn't open with a bang, there doesn't seem to be any major attack on the Earth, but this was probably due to the severe cheapness of the whole affair. I just got bored with it and switched it off. I was left thinking, what a waste. There's so much you could do with Flash Gordon, but these guys have turned it into a dull cheap and nasty piece of dren.

That is such a damn shame - a well made modern remake with good special effects could be really great, but it sounds like they've totally cocked it up.

I always thought the nearest they ever got to a modern flash was Farscape. I always called Scorpious 'Ming' and John Chriton (a human blasted into an alien world) was perfect as the dashing wisecracking hero.

Never really watched Farscape, so I can't comment.

Never really watched Farscape, so I can't comment. Then you are in for a treat. Think Flash Gordon meets HR Giger designers and you got the right idea. Not surprising really as the creator is part of the O'Bannon clan that made Alien

I watched all the Farscape episodes. Definitely one of the most imaginative shows I've seen. I can see why you make the comparisons to Flash.

The members of the Sci-Fi channel forums have ripped into it. I managed to see the pilot myself and i think its crap. Dull, slow and uninspiring.
