This is one of my all time favourite sci fi films. The whole film is pure sci fi opera at its best regardless of the Trek setting. The acting is top notch the script is witty and not over blown. the editing is some of the best ive ever seen and the pace and tension is edge of seat stuff. The score is fantastic, it conveys the drama and tension perfectly. 9/10 almost perfection. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAAl2zfk684Reliant ambush. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkeOSNW9WZ4KHANNN! www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsYwf_VMmPUFinal Battle. Note how the ships fly, not like fighter jets but like proper battleships. The detal of the wepons fire and the close up almost voyeristic way they show all the damage is almost artistic.

Yep, same here. I think it's generally recognised as the best one out of the lot. And rightly so.

I love this film - I am a Trek fan - but it is not my favourite. My favourite is the Motion Picture. The Motion Picture is more like 2001 than the rest of the ST films (which are more action), the one SF film that I call a work of art. The Motion Picture is the last ST project that Roddenbery had a real say in!

I watched the first 3 Trek films again recently (all I have on DVD). The acting is generally (lovably) hilarious- especially Checkhov- I've got MDF in my flat that acts better than him! He really is the worst of the bunch. I love Motion Picture- a great sci-fi film overall- I think it transcends just Trek. And it's got Persis Khambatta in it- hubba hubba etc. I really enjoyed all the movies with the original cast (even Search for Spock and Final Frontier-I reckon that one was closest to the original episodes)- the Next Gen films were crap in my opinion. Just extended episodes (they didn't even 'look' or 'feel' like movies). First Contact was OK, but otherwise, no. WAY too twee. There you go though. That's me.

Yep i prefer the 1st Star Trek movie too. The sheer scale and beauty of the USS Enterprise has never been matched in the other films and the music score by Jerry Goldsmith is magical. Wrath was good although Shatner and Montelban overacted to the determant of the film. D.F.

Overacted? That's half the joy of those two in the movie though!
"For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee"- great!
"THIS is Ceti Alpha FIEEVE"

someone mentioned that they prefer the first movie... well, to each his own, but to prefer the music over Star Trek II score?
come on, that music from the 1st motion picture was just... campy. the REAL masterpiece was ST II.

I'll always love the first movie for the Kubrickesque majesty and music, albeit a somewhat streched plot line. It's a beauty to see on the big screen. Always reminds me a bit of 2001:.
The Wrath Of Kahn by contrast had a much more focused and character driven story. Additionally, (as Rusti's already mentioned) it features some of the most realistic space battles, evah. Damn good even by todays standards!
