Never seen a good clear picture of that sidearm from Alien before - yes you can see the basis of the design.

You sure it's a FAL? It looks a little tubular to me (but then again I'm easily confused). It reminds me more of the old American 'grease gun' SMG from WW2.
The pulse rifle was made from a (heavily) modifed Thompson SMG.
Anyway back to topic. There's no picture (except the one in my head), but the all time best weapon has to be Iain Bank's Lazy Gun. Insanely powerful, with bizarre and darkly comic effects.
