Anybody seen the movie? It was epic. Anybody read the second volume of the comic? It was even more epic. Anyway, the film is based on the first volume of the comic. In the second volume of the comic, the martians from The War of the Worlds invaded. Back to the film. At the very beginning of the scene where the Nautilus is slowly navigating the waterways of Venice, the screen is moving from left to right. It passes over a brick wall with posters on it. This is the big part: One of the posters is labeled, "VOLCANOES ON MARS". Now, anyone who is familiar with TWotW and read the second sentence of the second paragraph knows what this means: Is there going to be The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen II? Well, if there is, then...hang on...my brain is processing the necessary amount of excitement required...nnnghh...ghhh...rrrghh...*Brain asplodes*

Apparently there isn't. Sean Connery retired and the first film didn't do enough money.

If you listen to the directors commentary on the dvd they say if they get the money the sequel would be based on the second comic about the invasion by the Marsies.
A real shame about it never happening since I would have LOVED to have seen John Carter lead the assault on the Mollusks home city. ;D
"What was that chap's name again, Sah Major?" "The Yank, sah? John Carter, sah." "Oh, yes. A Virginian. Gone native, eh?" "Yes, Sah. Marshies say he's more Martian than they are. He is made of the sands of the deserts, with the waters of the canals flowing through his veins. What rot." "Pity. But what can one expect from an American..."
Cheers, Þórgrímr

I liked the fact that they wrapped the story around the martian invasion as opposed to actually changing anything.

If a really great authentic film had been made [ not Timbo's crap ] it could be good but otherwise I think it would water Wells story down even more. We'd have a story about the Martians invading Victorian England but it wouldn't be HGWTWOTW. I'd hate that - and it could make film studios even less willing to do a decent Victorian version.

I would've liked to see it all the same. I really enjoyed the first one, despite the critics caning it. It was an exciting adventure yarn with good effects and a good cast. Don't understand why the critics hated it so much.

Although it was pretty well watered down and lost some of the edge of the Graphic Novel, I agree with Richie, it was still an entertaining romp.

I'd love to see an adaptation - no chance though. By the way, I didn't like the first film and thought it nowt like the book. No Invisible Man taking advantage of a girl's school? Miss Murray reduced to cliche goth vampire instead of ace clever woman vocally reducing men to quivering jelly with her stern put downs and keeping everyone in order? FOR SHAME.
