I managed to see this the other night and was pleasantly impressed with it. Dakota Blue Richards who plays Lyra was very good, as was the rest of the supporting cast - Daniel Craig (not in it much, but was great when on screen), Sam Elliot (always brilliant), Nicole Kidman (a lot better than I thought she'd be and a more complex baddie than I thought too), Sir Ian McKellen (his voice is well suited for Lorek's character), Eva Green (sufficiently tantalising), Ian McShane (didn't recognise his voice at the time as Ragnar) and many more.
I thought it was a bit darker than Stardust with a much lesser comedy element, which worked well. The effects were all excellent - the polar bear fight in particular was very well done. The story rattled along at a good pace and having not read the book, I felt it held together well without any major plotholes or anything.
Overall a very enjoyable film and I'll look forward to the next installment.

I didn't expect to like it but I did. I've not read the books either but, as a film, it was pretty good.

I wanted to see this and missed it. I may have to pick up the dvd. I haven't read the books, but from what I've heard you don't really have to to get it.

Me & the Mammy went at Xmas Only problem it kinda rushed at the end to let you know all the stuff thats to come in the next ones. Very good special effects. Didn't think it would be as good as it was as some reviews kept going on about the "religious undertones" Get over yourself - it was a good family movie

I always thought the books were supposed to be critical of religion, not religious. I think they played that down for the movie though.

Yes, from what I've heard the books are very anti-religion, but the first film played it down as far as I'm concerned.

I was pleasantly surprised at Nicole's performance, she come accross to me as a very snotty up-on-herself actress (yes ACTRESS not actor! you're a woman, women who act are ACTRESSES! ffs!) anyway the film was ok for the hour or two it lasted, nice graphics (big whoop!) but not a film I'd choose to see again, quite forgetable to be honest. What I hated was that they cast these posh little rich kids to try and put on a commoner's accent and their upperclass voice kept poking through in their dialogue every now and again. Why cant casting directors just cast people with the right accent in thefirst place, there are faaarsands of 'em! see even I do a better commoner accent than those kids! blimey im agnry today, spitting out a few ranting replies today

I absolutely loved the books- definaltely read them if you haven't already. But from the mixed reviews it's getting, I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to the movie- especially if major points are missed.
Worst thing is, the less than sparkling reception/ticket sales it did could jeopardise the sequels being made- the producers, apparently after so many complaints, are claiming that they will make less compromises with the story for the remainder.
Why does everything have to be dumbed down and sanitised these days? FFS!

I'm surprised this has gotten nothing but rave reviews here. I did enjoy the movie, the effects were absolutely wonderful, and yes Kidman did make a good villainess. (And how I wish she'd played the Snow Queen in "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", instead of the film having a limp performance by a nobody actress.) But the story was very obviously rushed, they clearly tried to cram far too much into it and wound up with lots of things being poorly developed and unexplained. I thought whoever played the heroine did a reasonably good job, but her performance was far from outstanding, and I've heard others criticize it. If you want to see a great performance by a juvenile actress in a recent fantasy film, watch "Pan's Labyrinth".
