Well - now I've watched up to the end of season one (yes, yes - I know I'm a little behind...), here are my thoughts- 1) It's fantastic- gritty and realistic in many ways 2) Why hasn't Baltar been assigned to secure medical quarters for obvious schizophrenia?!! 3) It follows the original differently, but in many ways with lots of nice references So overall, I love it but... 4) It's a bit depressing, isn't it? Well- mankind on the brink of apparent genocide with spies and saboteurs at every corner and no sign of a few hours off for the next coupla years at least and a faint hope of a new planet to live on. Hmmm- those cards aren't dealt with much sympathy are they?!

SPOILERS:
DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER U HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Earth: They find Earth its set in our 22 century and much of it is destroyed due to war.
Characters:
One character commits suicide. The 'Final Five' are in fact the Five Lords of Kobol. The Cylons are derived from these first five.
Cylons: The cylons split into two factions, one lot want to support humans the second do not (more complex than that but thats what it seems) and the Cylons fight each other.
Earth is found around mid season and the remainder is to decide what they do next.

Avoiding the spoilers, I have season 2 of this cheer inspiring series on the way.
I'm rather looking forward to it.
You can't argue with £17.99 from Play, can you?

Part way (6 episodes) through S2 now- all I can say is wow!
this really is genuinely better than the original. Similar enough, but bigger on the drama and the plot twists around so much it's hard to know what will come next!

So- season 2 done now- much of it was absolutely amazing- especially the episodes around the appearance of the Pegasus. Was a little disappointed about a few filler episodes after this- didn't really move the story forward much, but they were pretty good and certainly added to the complications of central characters. I will now wait until Season 3 appears for a reduced price (still fairly expensive for me...) and purchase from there. Rusti- Does the Razor DVD come after season 3, or is it OK to get before, without spoiling the plot? I would say at this point, that the new BSG is so much better than the original. Some may contest this, but it's more tense, better scripted and performed and gritty without the camp cheesiness of the late 70's. I prefer the design of the original Centurions, but putting nostalgia goggles aside and not nitpicking about character changes, the re-imagining does fairly closely follow the main points of the original and doesn't often hang around- it's all fairly fast acting with little 'fluff' in the plots. Now- do I dare spoil it all by getting Galactica 80?

Razor is set during the Pegasus time. It shows how the Pegasus escapes the Cylon Invasion in a brilliant battle.

I just saw Season 4 ep1... amazing edge of the seat stuff... Donal you must watch S3 it gets darker still. Its more plot driven than 1/2 and there is a love story/triangle thats a bit blegh, but overall its a brill series u must get.

I believe the new BSG is the best-written, best-acted SF show ever on TV. That feels like heresy-- how can anything be better than Classic Star Trek? But I think this is the first time I've ever seen a continuing science fiction show on TV which seems actually aimed at adults. Hooray!
The down side is... everything else pales by comparison. "Lost"? "Heroes"? Yawn. Quit watching them. Even "Smallville" seems rather juvenile by comparison, altho I'm sticking with that.
I like the show so much I've joined an "over 30" BSG discussion list so I can talk about every episode after it airs.

Not a huge fan of Season 3 except for the ark episodes. It became bogged down with soap opera padding. The anders/lee/starbuck/dee relationship story was like wading through concrete. Thats my only gripe though. S4 has so far picked up the nice tight punch of S1/S2
