A first class actor. He'll be sorely missed. And for Anna Nicole Smith to die on the same day there abouts...

And for Anna Nicole Smith to die on the same day there abouts... Hers was always a story of being careful getting what you want. I felt so sorry for her when her son died just after the birth of her daughter. Indeed it's a very sad day for a lot of people

Very sad news. He was a brilliant actor, and still at the height of his powers, I thought he had years left in him.
Still, he was apparently in good health, and slipped away in his sleep:
Richardson died in his sleep at his London home in the early hours of Friday morning.

Very sad and unexpected He was a superb actor and very versatile... He had brilliant and subtle comic timing, as exhibited in "Brazil" and the "House of Cards" trilogy. He wasn't a genre snob either... take his grandstand performance in "Dark City" for example RIP Ian, you will be missed KR

That's a real shame, he was one of our greats. And Anna Nicole Smith, too? That's a shocker.

He was a great actor, I especially admired him for his work in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The way he carried a cup of tea and a pile of documents in his introductory scene was incredible.
I also loved his portrayal of Lord Groan. His conversation with his daughter, where he has a brief moment - a glimmer - of a loving relationship with her, and then slides back down into madness and isolation is truly heartbreaking.
The venom in the line - “The poets… we should never have listened to the poets.” The man was a master, and defines my mental image of Lord Groan when I’m reading the books.
I’ll miss him, it was always fun to see him enjoy himself in quite eccentric films (Brazil, Dark City) and he raised quite a bit of mediocre script with his delivery in his time.
Rest in peace, Ian.

I first remembered him from the TV movie 'An Ungentlemanly Act' all about the invasion of the Falkland islands. he played a brilliant role in that. I then realised what an actor her was and sought him out in other works.
